style=\"font-size:clamp(15.747px, 0.984rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.645), 24px);font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Dr Laurie King is a materials chemist working in the field of electrocatalysis for sustainable energy storage and conversion. Dr King\u2019s research portfolio includes a broad range of experiences spanning expertise in advanced materials synthesis, electrochemistry, photoelectrochemistry and materials characterisation.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, Dr King is interested in identifying and quantifying modes of catalyst failure as a function of catalyst morphology, crystallinity, and catalyst-support interactions. Through these investigations, she hopes to identify strategies for the design of stable non-precious and low-precious metal content catalysts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr King previously led research at the SUNCAT Research Center at Stanford University focusing on the design of catalysts for fuel cell and electrolyser applications, in collaboration with theoreticians, beamline scientists, microscopists and industrial partners. In 2019, Dr King joined Manchester Metropolitan University as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Natural Sciences and Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre. Here, the King Research Group focuses on the development of new and novel materials for both electrochemical hydrogen generation as means of storing renewable energy, as well as the subsequent power generate from the \u2018green hydrogen\u2019. The group explores advanced materials, novel methods and innovative devices to achieve these goals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-ed92f1a2 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who am I?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I am a Material Chemist working in the field of electrocatalysis and electrochemical storage and conversion technologies.\u00a0 In brief, our research is focused on developing new materials and fundamental understanding to develop clean, sustainable and green technologies for a Net Zero future.\u00a0\u00a0More specifically, our research group is focused on the design, discovery and characterisation of new materials and catalyst motifs.\u00a0 In particular, we are interested in characterising these materials in fuel cells and electrolysers. Society 2<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; In particular, we focus on semiconductors and solar cells in my portion of the course.&nbsp; We seek to explore 1) how a solar cell works, 2) how solar cells are manufactured in industry and research labs todays, and 3) how to understand the performance of a solar cell (e.g. how efficient is a solar cell?).&nbsp; This course is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about technologies that is essentail for the globe to reduce our carbon emissions and meet renewable energy targets<em>.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Frontiers<\/strong>&nbsp;(MChem) &amp;&nbsp;<strong>Energy Materials&nbsp;<\/strong>(MSc Advanced Materials).&nbsp; In this course we discuss next-generation energy storage and conversion technologies.&nbsp; Specifically, we discuss the challenges and opportunities of energy production technologies (from fossil fuels to renewables to green hydrogen).&nbsp; Primarily, we focus on energy technologies that provide transformative routes to large-scale decarbonisation of energy.&nbsp; From lithium ion batteries, to supercapacitors and fuel cells, we will discuss how these technologies work and the materials that are essential to their operation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>This course provides students with the required knowledge to understand how our future energy and electricity requirements will meet Net Zero requirements.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bulk Characterisation<\/strong>&nbsp;(MSc Advanced Materials).&nbsp; This course provides an in depth discussion to enable students to gain an expert understanding of numerous bulk characterisation techniques.&nbsp; Specifically, in my portion of the class I will teach x-ray diffraction (XRD) and secondary electron microscopy (SEM).&nbsp; The course is designed to incorporate numerous research examples so that students become familiar with interpretating and assessing data in industry and academia.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Physical Chemistry Labs<\/strong>&nbsp;(Second year).&nbsp;
