{"id":10582,"date":"2023-02-28T15:01:35","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T15:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/?p=10582"},"modified":"2023-03-06T15:08:15","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T15:08:15","slug":"oldham-college-wins-beacon-award-for-innovative-work-supporting-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/oldham-college-wins-beacon-award-for-innovative-work-supporting-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Oldham College wins Beacon Award for work supporting students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oldham.ac.uk\/\">Oldham College<\/a> is celebrating after winning a prestigious Beacon Award for supporting its students at a ceremony in London yesterday (February 27).<\/p>\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/oldham-college-wins-beacon-award-for-innovative-work-supporting-students\/\" target=\"_self\">Read more<span class=\"screen-reader-text\">: Oldham College wins Beacon Award for work supporting students<\/span><\/a>\n\n\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegeawards.co.uk\/beacon-awards1\"> Support for Students award<\/a> puts an emphasis on practical teaching, equipping students with the skills that they will need for future employment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winning entry shows how the college has brought safeguarding into daily teaching, including a new  programme delivered by specialist staff that has already benefited around 2,500 students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A huge congratulations to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OldhamCollege?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@OldhamCollege<\/a> for winning the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RCU_Limited?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RCU_Limited<\/a> Award for Support for Students in this year\u2019s Beacon Awards. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AoCBeacons?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AoCBeacons<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LoveOurColleges?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LoveOurColleges<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BimvMxsH2y\">pic.twitter.com\/BimvMxsH2y<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Association of Colleges (AoC) (@AoC_info) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AoC_info\/status\/1630228073173110784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 27, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alun Francis, Oldham College principal, said: \u201cWe are incredibly proud to have won this prized Beacon Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a hugely significant achievement for us to gain national recognition for the innovative approach that has been implemented here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re determined to develop and encourage the social, practical and emotional knowledge that will help them to look after themselves, and others, and to make really positive contributions to the wider community as adults.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the projects included in the college&#8217;s submission was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatermanchester-ca.gov.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-secures-half-a-million-pounds-for-safer-streets-initiative\/\">Safer Streets initiative<\/a> where the college worked with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmp.police.uk\/\">Greater Manchester Police<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tfgm.com\/\">Transport for Greater Manchester<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/more-than-7000-people-sign-petition-to-save-oldham-coliseum-from-closure\/\">Oldham<\/a> campaign challenged street harassment of women and girls across the public transport network.
