{"id":11853,"date":"2023-05-19T08:48:16","date_gmt":"2023-05-19T07:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/?p=11853"},"modified":"2023-05-22T18:19:42","modified_gmt":"2023-05-22T17:19:42","slug":"bus-diversions-on-the-curry-mile-to-be-permanent-following-illegal-parking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/bus-diversions-on-the-curry-mile-to-be-permanent-following-illegal-parking\/","title":{"rendered":"Bus diversions on the Curry Mile to be made permanent"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Bus diversions in <a href=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/?s=rusholme\">Rusholme<\/a> are to be made permanent from July 23 following severe congestion levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Illegal parking for restaurants and bars along the<a href=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/?s=curry+mile\"> Curry Mile<\/a> has said to be the main cause for the congestion levels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bus services 42, 43, 142 and 143 between Hathersage Road and Platt Lane Rusholme have been diverted on Friday and Saturday nights since October 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2023\/05\/Bus-diversions-curry-mile-min-1024x693.png\" alt=\"A diagram of the new bus route.\" class=\"wp-image-12339\" width=\"644\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2023\/05\/Bus-diversions-curry-mile-min-1024x693.png 1024w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2023\/05\/Bus-diversions-curry-mile-min-300x203.png 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2023\/05\/Bus-diversions-curry-mile-min-768x520.png 768w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2023\/05\/Bus-diversions-curry-mile-min.png 1326w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The diversion, credit: Zara Gallimore<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The introduction of cycle lanes on Wilmslow Road it has decreased the amount of space for buses and larger vehicles to get through.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Curry Mile\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dwIxPDeM95w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Curry Mile, credit: Zara Gallimore.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the council doing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rusholme councillor Rabnawaz Akbar said: \u201cThere are vehicles coming to the district, there is congestion, so buses are late and that has an impact on their timetable in the evening which is why they have been diverted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have managed to get some funding through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatermanchester-ca.gov.uk\">GMCA<\/a> (Greater Manchester Combined Authority, <a href=\"https:\/\/tfgm.com\">TFGM<\/a> (Transport for Greater Manchester), to do a transport study in the area and we know the challenges and that will hopefully come up with some possible solutions how to eradicate this pinch point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s not going to be easy apart from the financial cost it will be mean cooperation from people using the cycle lane, cooperation from businesses to maybe take away some of the parking spaces which are limited in the area, we are aware of it and dealing with it, but it is not an easy one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are Stagecoach doing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for Stagecoach said: \u201cWe understand that our customers would prefer us to continue with the direct route through Rusholme, and we have raised this issue with Manchester City Council and Transport for Greater Manchester. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;However, with no resolution to the problem, we are left with no other option than to look to make this diversion permanent from 23 July.
