But countless studies show that sitting for long periods of time can be detrimental to our health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For these reasons, Manchester City Council has teamed up with NHS Manchester to create a Healthy Weight Strategy. This provides a framework to actively decrease obesity and give residents the tools they need to live healthier lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read the complete strategy <a href=\"file:\/\/\/Users\/rubyq\/Downloads\/Manchester_Healthy_Weight_Strategy_20_25.pdf\">HERE<\/a> which addresses themes such as Prevention &amp; Support, Food &amp; Culture, Physical Activity and Environment &amp; Neighbourhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, cars and motorbikes are convenient and make it much faster to get from point A to point B. So walking is not feasible for the average person in terms of the time it takes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, most communities are looking to encourage people to find alternatives to motor vehicles, without breaking the bank (especially in the current economic crisis). Photo: Ruby Qaimkhani<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, locals can mend their bikes ready for inner-city cycling or heading to green spaces like Heaton Park which is only a stones\u2019 throw away from Khizra mosque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative hopes to tackle climate and health crises by getting more people on bikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bee Active and TfGM<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Creators of the initiative recognise that some community residents may not be able to afford to get new bikes. So, together with the Transport for Greater Manchester, <a href=\"https:\/\/beeactive.tfgm.com\/cycling\/bike-libraries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bee Active<\/a> have created a \u2018bike library\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are local centres that allow people to borrow a bike, similar to checking out books in a library, to try them out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They aim to give people the chance to try cycling first before taking the plunge to begin the hobby. Greater Manchester has more than 20 <a href=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/bike-library-programme-in-brunswick-offers-opportunity-for-locals-to-borrow-a-bike-for-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bike library<\/a> locations and courses are available to help everyone from beginners to experienced riders.
