Crowds of protesters filled the square outside of Manchester Central Convention Complex on Sunday in support of the trans community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The protest was in response to Rishi Sunak\u2019s Conservative conference speech in which he said \u201ca man is a man and a woman is a woman\u201d, referring to it as \u201cjust common sense.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His comments have been met with outrage across the LGBTQ+ community, with Trans Pride Manchester organising this protest at the same location the Prime Minister made his comments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘We are being used as a political pawn, we are a scapegoat<\/strong>‘<\/p>\nArlo (they\/them), one of the organisers of the protest<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

One of the organisers, Arlo said: \u201cI hope it gives the message that we are not going anywhere, we are here to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They said that despite the negative rhetoric currently circulating in the media, the protest proved \u201cthere is still resistance and joy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arlo said of the government\u2019s anti-trans comments: \u201cWe are being used as a political pawn, we are a scapegoat for wider problems. Ultimately, we\u2019ve been used before and we\u2019ll be used again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we all come together like this, it has a huge impact. We\u2019re fighting bigger and better than ever before and it\u2019s not going to stop us living our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speakers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An overwhelming number of attendees at the protest did an address to the crowds regarding the Conservatives\u2019 plans to roll back trans rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A teacher spoke against the Conservative party\u2019s wish for schools to out their pupils if they are seen to identify as trans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: \u201cTeachers don\u2019t go into this job without having a duty of care for all children and we’ll do everything to support trans kids.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two twins also spoke at the protest, Ashley and her brother George Evans, who is a trans man. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt makes me emotional standing here as I never would have pictured this 10 years ago,\u201d George said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He shared his experience of the workplace and his goal of educating people about being trans. He said trans people don\u2019t want to be \u201ca statistic for HR\u201d but rather “go into the work place and feel comfortable to be yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One protester said: \u201cI came because it\u2019s very easy to feel alone when the government is rolling out legislation to restrict our rights\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Stonewall, 84% of trans young people in the UK have deliberately tried to harm themselves and more than two in five trans young people have attempted to take their own life. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trans organisations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bex Shorunke from trans youth support charity, Mermaids<\/a><\/em> said:\u00a0\u201cTrans people are a tiny population of society and yet they are disproportionately more likely to be bullied at school, discriminated against at work, experience poorer health outcomes, homelessness and hate crime. Instead of proactively working to sustainably and compassionately address these injustices the Tory party chooses to instead deny trans people\u2019s very existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The end product is a society in which the persecution of trans people is legitimised, as demonstrated by the year-on-year rise in transphobic hate crime and the steady increase in online bullying. Trans people deserve so much more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Home Office, hate crimes against trans people have increased by 186% over the past five years. It said transgender issues being discussed by politicians\u00a0\u2018may have led to an increase in these offences\u2019.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Conservative party conference, the government also expressed plans to segregate trans patients from cis-gender patients in hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
