Within minutes of the close of all polling stations across the UK, the <strong>Exit Poll figures<\/strong> were released, showing the following figures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conservatives \u2013 314<\/li>\n<li>Labour \u2013 266<\/li>\n<li>SNP \u2013 34<\/li>\n<li>LD \u2013 14<\/li>\n<li>PC \u2013 3<\/li>\n<li>GRN \u2013 1<\/li>\n<li>UKIP \u2013 0<\/li>\n<li>OTH \u2013 18<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At 10.20pm, the Conservative party was initially named as the largest party, alongside the warning that their chance of holding the overall majority was not certain at the time. It was reported that Senior Conservatives did not believe the results from the Exit Poll, adding to the steadily building anticipation as the night unfolds.<\/p>\n<p>In a live interview with ITV News, despite it being \u201cearly days\u201d, former Conservative politician George Osborne claimed, \u201cIf the poll is accurate, this is completely catastrophic for the Conservatives. But let\u2019s wait and see, we have a lot of votes to be counted, we\u2019re clearly going to be in for a very long night\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As the clock hits 10.30pm, counting is officially underway across the UK. Twitter\u2019s feed is alive with excitement, anticipation, and of course, debate, followed by the hashtag #Generalelection2017 in which most are taking advantage of:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1397\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2017\/06\/19022193_10213408023497642_916965738_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"394\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2017\/06\/19022193_10213408023497642_916965738_n.jpg 640w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2017\/06\/19022193_10213408023497642_916965738_n-295x300.jpg 295w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Reports from the BBC found that the pound fell against the dollar and euro following the Exit Poll results; casting doubt over whether the Conservatives will win an overall majority. In the words of ITV\u2019s Robert Peston, \u201cif the exit poll is even in the remotely in the right territory, this is a political earthquake of the sort that neither you or I have lived through\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A survey taken at polling stations across the UK strongly suggests Conservatives could get 314 MP\u2019s once the results have been counted; in order to get an overall majority, a party needs to get 326 seats. There are, of course, doubts in May\u2019s victory across the country. Professor of Politics at the University of Strathclyde John Curtice claimed that \u201cTheresa May\u2019s bid to win a landslide victory by calling a snap election had backfired\u201d when speaking on the BBC\u2019s Election coverage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most anticipated days of the year so far is underway, and the interminable wait of the count begins.
