Photo Credit: Rebecca Mills <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reclaim The Night <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/manchesterstudentsunion.com\/RECLAIMTHENIGHT\">Reclaim the Night<\/a> march, which raises awareness of sexual harassment and gender-based violence, took place in Manchester City Centre on November 29th 2023.  &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phoebe Boniface, 21, a student at BIMM University, said:  &#8220;You can\u2019t turn any more blind eyes; the figures speak for themselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I walk through Piccadilly Gardens every night from work, and it is the most terrifying part of my journey home,&#8221; She said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Phoebe stated: &#8220;Walking past all these big buildings, with loads of dark corners, and there is no security, police, or protection.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2023\/12\/reclaim-night-march-1-1.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/view.officeapps.live.com\/op\/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.publishing.service.gov.uk%2Fmedia%2F6512b361f6746b0012a4b9df%2Fcc_rdos_tool.xlsx&amp;wdOrigin=BROWSELINK\">A Ministry of Justice report<\/a> showed that there are 11,700 sexual offence cases awaiting court proceedings, 2,376 of which are adult rape cases. Photo Credit: Rebecca Mills<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Those figures are shocking&#8230;\u2019&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beth O\u2019Rafferty, a University of Manchester student, said:&nbsp;&#8220;Those figures are shocking, and clearly there\u2019s a huge issue with sexual assaults and anti-social behaviour around Piccadilly Gardens.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d be interested to know what Manchester City Council are doing to tackle this \u2013 improved lighting in the park and night angels could be the first steps taken,&#8221; Beth said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Florence Brown, 23, a University of Manchester student, said:  &#8220;I would feel safer if there were more night angels around at night or more safe places for women.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I just don&#8217;t understand why local councils aren&#8217;t implementing these things,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Northern Quota reached out to Manchester City Council.
