{"id":17361,"date":"2024-04-02T11:13:42","date_gmt":"2024-04-02T10:13:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/?p=17361"},"modified":"2024-04-08T20:27:42","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T19:27:42","slug":"businesses-harmed-in-chorlton-by-new-cycleways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/businesses-harmed-in-chorlton-by-new-cycleways\/","title":{"rendered":"Businesses harmed in Chorlton by new cycleways"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Divide in opinion over new Chorlton cycleways<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>23% footfall drop due to roadworks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Independent businesses disrupted for months<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Business owners in Chorlton have been sharing their disappointment on social media over the new cycleway system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/dutch-style-cycle-way-planned-between-chorlton-and-manchester\/\">&#8216;Dutch-style&#8217; cycle way<\/a>, originally proposed back in 2018 with a grant of \u00a33.9m, intends to connect the suburb to the city centre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work which began in February 2023 was scheduled to finish in September of the same year. The popular cafe opened its doors on Manchester Road in Chorlton over 18 months ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When talking about the process of the roadworks, he said: \u201cas of this year, mid-February, there was no work being done at all, which was more frustrating than some of the more disruptive stuff like drilling which you would expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m on speaking terms with the councillors but quite frankly there are no funds in place and there were no correct contracts it appears with the contractors to compensate businesses, should [the] work become negligent or disruptive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is still work ongoing on the footpath and cycle lane outside Smoak, but they aren&#8217;t the only place  experiencing disruptions due to this, a lot of businesses have witnessed a huge drop in footfall in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"638\" src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/03\/Jonathan-Barnett-1-1-1024x638.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/03\/Jonathan-Barnett-1-1-1024x638.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/03\/Jonathan-Barnett-1-1-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/03\/Jonathan-Barnett-1-1-768x478.jpg 768w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/03\/Jonathan-Barnett-1-1-1536x957.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/03\/Jonathan-Barnett-1-1-2048x1275.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jonathan Barnett has opened his cafe over 18 months ago in Chorlton \/ <em>Photo Credit: Anna Klekot<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A time of crisis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The cafe was shortlisted for coffee shop of the year in 2023 by <a href=\"https:\/\/foodanddrinkfestival.com\/news\/2024\/jan\/8\/-mfdf-2023-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Manchester Food and Drink Festival<\/a>. But despite of this, Jonathan notices less people coming in whilst the work is ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Footfall&#8217;s down 23%. There&#8217;s 1 in 4 less people walking past the shops around here and that&#8217;s going to have a double-digit percentage impact on businesses.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding, &#8220;Footfall isn&#8217;t like a light switch &#8211; it isn&#8217;t going to come straight back on when road works are finished so it&#8217;s something that we need to work on rebuilding.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The businesses are now on speaking terms with the council but are concerned about the long-term effect of this disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"568\" src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/03\/Manchester-Road-2-1024x568.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/03\/Manchester-Road-2-1024x568.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/03\/Manchester-Road-2-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/03\/Manchester-Road-2-768x426.jpg 768w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/03\/Manchester-Road-2-1536x853.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/03\/Manchester-Road-2-2048x1137.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Manchester Road in Chorlton \/ <em>Photo Credit: Anna Klekot<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A ghost town<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just down the road from Chorlton, West Didsbury is a &#8216;ghost-town&#8217; after seeing many businesses close after an increase in rent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When speaking about the situation in Chorlton, Jonathan has said: &#8220;regeneration is a good thing, but the way it&#8217;s been executed has created some serious risk and danger into what might happen.<strong>It&#8217;s unclear in which direction it might go<\/strong>. I&#8217;m not against regeneration it&#8217;s a good idea.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Mandie Shilton Godwin, councillor for Chorlton Park has said: &#8220;I&#8217;m really excited about the walking and cycleway nearing completion and I see it likely to grow in use over time as the Oxford Road one has once its fully open.
