student organises Music for Mental Health charity night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A young man from Manchester is channelling his passion for music and helping others by organising a <em>Music for Mental Health<\/em> charity night.<\/p>\n<p>Liam Casey, 20, who studies history and politics at the University of Salford, first came up with the idea on his own as a way of bringing people with shared interests together.<\/p>\n<p>According to Liam, the idea for the event, scheduled for 26<sup>th<\/sup> January 2018 at Salford University Students\u2019 Union, was originally sparked by a desire to put on a night full of music for people to just enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cIt was only later on that I realised I could also make money for mental health charities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMental health is close to my heart as I have suffered from both depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and also attempted suicide once before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Liam is doing most of the groundwork for the event alone, he is also lucky enough to have the backing of well-known Mancunian DJ Dave Sweetmore as well as his own father, Barry Casey, a former radio DJ himself.<\/p>\n<p>The plans come as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helpmusicians.org.uk\/\"><em>Help Musicians UK<\/em><\/a> also set up their own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsbeat\/article\/42224580\/mental-health-helpline-launches-for-musicians-managers-labels-and-tour-crew\">mental health support line<\/a> as part of their <em>Music Minds Matter<\/em> campaign, launched after the death of Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation recently oversaw a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helpmusicians.org.uk\/news\/blog\/how-help-musicians-uk-continues-to-support-musicians-mental-\">22% increase in requests for help<\/a> from musicians across the UK, according to their health and welfare team.<\/p>\n<p>Liam said: \u201cThis event will mostly be a band night made up of three different bands ranging from indie rock to new generation pop punk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy only real hope is that people will just enjoy themselves in a shared passion for music while also raising money and awareness for an amazing cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Liam is unable to reveal every detail at this stage for contractual reasons, one band already confirmed for the event is Birmingham indie outfit <em>The Clause<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Clause, <\/em>made up of four exciting youngsters, released their third single <em>Sixteen <\/em>in August and have since amassed an army of support across the UK.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"760\" height=\"499\" class=\"file-default media-element\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/sites\/default\/files\/the_clause.jpg\" data-fid=\"2146\" data-delta=\"1\" data-media-element=\"1\"><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"margin: 0px;\">Lead guitarist Liam Deakin, pictured furthest left <em>(photo: Laura Benwell)<\/em>,<em>&nbsp;<\/em>says they are honoured to be playing at the event as it centres on an important subject that needs tackling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"margin: 0px;\">He said: \u201cMental health seriously needs to be talked about and wider spread so that the people going through it don\u2019t feel so alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"margin: 0px;\">\u201cWe believe that music is one of the best forms of therapy and so bringing the two together to help out is brilliant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"margin: 0px;\">Liam admits he has also been at war with his own mental health for a long time and believes it is a much more serious problem than many people first think.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"margin: 0px;\">\u201cI think everybody knows someone who struggles with it\u201d, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"margin: 0px;\">\u201cDoing things like this is kind of sticking your fingers up to the people who tell those with problems to \u2018man up\u2019 and to a government that cuts the funding towards it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"margin: 0px;\">The Clause<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"margin: 0px;\"> will be joined on the bill at Salford Students\u2019 Union in January by an array of other artists to be confirmed at a later date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\"
