Photo Credit: Rebecca Mills<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Manchester Urban Digger (MUD) is a not-for-profit social enterprise and is based on three aims: improving the environment, improving personal well-being, and strengthening communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MUD gives the community the opportunity to learn new skills, make friends and access fresh, organically grown produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Improving the Environment <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Forever Fields was created as a community green space for the residents of Whalley Range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MUD practices organic principles and incorporates elements of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/permaculture\">permaculture <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/regenerative-agriculture\">regenerative agriculture <\/a>in Forever Fields, boosting biodiversity in Whalley Range. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/uk-food-security-index-2024\/uk-food-security-index-2024#indicator-6-energy-and-fertiliser-prices\">latest indicators<\/a> show that climate change remains a long-term risk to UK food security. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exceptionally wet winter and spring of 2024 have significantly challenged domestic production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"437\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/05\/Screenshot_20-5-2024_193745_www.dropbox.com_.jpeg\" alt=\"Forever Fields Sign in Whalley Range\" class=\"wp-image-19067\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/05\/Screenshot_20-5-2024_193745_www.dropbox.com_.jpeg 437w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/05\/Screenshot_20-5-2024_193745_www.dropbox.com_-187x300.jpeg 187w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/moderngov.dover.gov.uk\/documents\/s38131\/Briefing%20Report%20-%20Food%20Poverty%20Review.pdf\">The Department of Health <\/a>defines food poverty as&nbsp;\u2018the inability to afford, or to have access to, food to make up a healthy diet.\u2019 Photo Credit: Rebecca Mills.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A director of MUD, Mike Hodson, said: &#8220;Supermarkets have opted for the most cost-effective way of providing fruit and vegetables, which often means they lack nutrition and flavour and aren&#8217;t produced in environmentally friendly ways.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK food and drink sector emits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrap.ngo\/resources\/report\/uk-food-system-ghg-emissions\">35% of carbon emissions<\/a>, which can be linked to food transportation and manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.gov.uk\/info\/500370\/zero_carbon\/8653\/ward_climate_change_action_plans\/7\">the latest figures<\/a> show that 20% of Manchester&#8217;s carbon footprint came from the food industry.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Forever Fields reduces emissions by growing food in the community, allowing local businesses and residents to shop locally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8216;Our food should be as diverse as we are.&#8217;
