{"id":19350,"date":"2024-05-24T23:23:03","date_gmt":"2024-05-24T22:23:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/?p=19350"},"modified":"2024-05-28T09:10:06","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T08:10:06","slug":"concerns-rise-as-congestion-worsens-in-whalley-range","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/concerns-rise-as-congestion-worsens-in-whalley-range\/","title":{"rendered":"Concerns rise as congestion worsens in Whalley Range"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Locals have had enough, as the congestion of Clarendon Road and College Road is not improving. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Residents on these roads are concerned about environmental and health problems. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People express frustration as &#8216;more needs to be done&#8217; to fix this issue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span><b>Residents are unhappy as two <\/b><\/span><strong>congested roads are \u2018chaos\u2019, and there is no plan to improve this issue.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clarendon Road and College Road in Whalley Range cause frustration, as the street is &#8216;unusable&#8217; at times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laura Packwood, a resident near Clarendon Road, has labelled it as &#8216;chaos&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The road is described as &#8216;dangerous&#8217; as parked cars often obstruct drivers&#8217; views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, cars are known to speed down both roads, causing major concern. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One resident who wished to remain anonymous said: &#8220;Speeding is a serious issue on Clarendon Road and College Road, and we have petitioned for ramps on other roads in the area, yet it was declined.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;Selfish drivers&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Laura has firsthand experience with the dangers of Clarendon Road, as her beloved cat and dog were both run over by a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laura said: &#8220;The congestion is caused by people who park on double yellow lines by the shops. There is no room for cars to pass through.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;People come from both directions and just drive at each other, and no one feels like it&#8217;s their responsibility to give way.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/05\/IMG_5882.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">These videos were taken at a &#8216;non-busy&#8217; time. Video Credit: Rebecca Mills<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Locals highlighted that they have had bad experiences with road rage, and if they can avoid driving down these roads, they will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laura said: &#8220;There is usually a standoff with a backlog of cars both ways.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other residents complained that horns can be heard as cars refuse to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clarendon Road and College Road is an ongoing issue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This problem is ongoing, as the congestion was noted in a 2012 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.gov.uk\/egov_downloads\/5_-__British_Muslim_Heritage_Centre.pdf\">planning application<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The planning application emphasised that Clarendon Road is subject to &#8216;excessive&#8217; traffic, congestion and parking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within this location are two primary schools, the British Muslim Heritage Centre, and multiple shops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/05\/IMG_5885.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Residents who live on Clarendon Road stress that &#8216;inconsiderate drivers&#8217; and the width of the road are the main issue. Video Credit: Rebecca Mills<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Congestion is allegedly caused by several factors, including school pick-up and drop-off and parking problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, the British Muslim Heritage Centre doubles as a wedding venue, which locals often find challenging due to traffic congestion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They describe it as a &#8216;nightmare,&#8217; especially when guests are arriving and leaving all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;Whether you live there or not, it affects us all&#8230;&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A resident who wishes to remain anonymous said: &#8220;Both roads are narrow, and there is heavy traffic, noise, and pollution around this area.
