And&nbsp;commuters have experienced repeated disruption over the past year because of industrial action by the RMT Union.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I still try to catch the train to work where possible but the car is already more cost effective and time effective and the increase in fares will only widen this gap. Increasing fares at a rate faster than salaries are increasing just punishes commuters.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 Kieron Rees (@kieronsrees) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kieronsrees\/status\/948180019800690688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 2, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" async=\"\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>MMU transport expert Tony Miles explained&nbsp;how the government is justifying the biggest rail fare hikes for five years: \u201cFares have gone up in order to fund better trains with more capacity particularly in the North of England and more services on Sundays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1956\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/tony_miles_pic_2015_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1535\" height=\"2126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/tony_miles_pic_2015_0.jpg 1535w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/tony_miles_pic_2015_0-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/tony_miles_pic_2015_0-739x1024.jpg 739w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/tony_miles_pic_2015_0-768x1064.jpg 768w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/tony_miles_pic_2015_0-1109x1536.jpg 1109w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/tony_miles_pic_2015_0-1479x2048.jpg 1479w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1535px) 100vw, 1535px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But commuter Andrew Porterfield believes that train fares should not be rising when train&nbsp;services are&nbsp;not investing to replace ageing trains and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThere may be a case for train fares not to increase for services where the rolling stock of trains hasn\u2019t been upgraded then why increase the price on those lines?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also believes the government need to intervene to make the railways more affordable, saying: \u201cTrain fare increases should be linked to wage increases not the retail price index.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Mr Miles warned politicians, particularly from the Labour Party who called on the government, that&nbsp;renationalising the railways would not necessarily result in fares decreasing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRenationalising wouldn\u2019t resolve this one. Apart from the billions of pounds of investment it would cost to buy everything back which somebody would have to pay for- taxpayers probably,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cPeople who previously worked at British Rail have said that fares would still rise after the railways had been renationalised.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rail fares have risen to their highest level for five years last week, angering commuters and politicians.
