There are now 20 pods in six locations in the city.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"480\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1qE4S6qPiq9FshaFlAOXCdufw-h0&amp;hl=en\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The beacons are simple to use according to Mr Goulden, who founded his startup company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.likenoother.co\/\">Like No Other<\/a> to push innovative projects in Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>Using Google\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/beacons\/\"> Eddystone<\/a> technology, the beacons transmit data through bluetooth directly to a person\u2019s phone when they are within reach.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cFirst of all, if you strip away the technology it\u2019s quite a simple proposition. In that somebody would receive a notification on their phone and telling them something about the place where they\u2019re stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn doing so, hopefully, the story is more relevant. How they get that notification, there\u2019s Bluetooth around Manchester and they broadcast content via Bluetooth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent audit by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, local papers lost readers by an average of 11.2 percent year on year in the second half of 2016.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m one of those people who cares deeply about where they live and is always interested in knowing what\u2019s happening but would never think of buying their local newspaper<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1961\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/stuart_goulden_-_like_no_other.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1002\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/stuart_goulden_-_like_no_other.jpeg 1500w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/stuart_goulden_-_like_no_other-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/stuart_goulden_-_like_no_other-1024x684.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/stuart_goulden_-_like_no_other-768x513.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s a different way to talk to people like myself, and to reach them and engage them. At the moment that\u2019s through smart phones. I just put two and two together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The project was given a boost in the summer when Google invested \u20ac50,000 (circa \u00a345,000) to get the idea started.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Goulden said: \u201cI think it\u2019s exciting for the user but for newsrooms. Here is an ability to target a certain person, a certain location with a story written about that area. For the user, it\u2019s news that finds you wherever you are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a match day you could start the match day experience earlier by curating news for those arriving to the stadium with team news. It\u2019s just a very different way of thinking about the same kind of news operation, news ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pods aren\u2019t only a new way for users to read the news, but according to Mr Goulden also offers new ways for journalists report stories.<\/p>\n<p>Manchester Evening News editor, Rob Irvine, said: \u201cThis is a niche. In terms of growing it to scale it has the fundamental problem of giving prominence to interest of content by locality &#8211; but for much if our lives we are interested in content by category.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a sense there are communities of geography and communities if interest. People walking down a road in Manchester may have a hundred reasons to be there and a zillion interests they do not share. Yes there are interested in Manchester but do the care about what happens in Ducie St because they are walking down it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" async=\"\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>People are still unfamiliar with the technology, but 23-year-old engineering student Scott Wallace thought the idea could bridge the gap between young readers and the media.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cI think the idea is really interesting because it lets you read stories that are relevant to where you are, and we\u2019re not doing anything we wouldn\u2019t be doing anyways, as we\u2019re always on our phones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know about the pods but I\u2019ll keep an eye-out and my bluetooth on from now on.
