Call to save iconic Ducie Bridge in city centre from demolition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">The Ducie Bridge, located on Corporation Street dates back to 1892 and has been host to acts such as Alias Kid and Death to Strange.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">The pub, currently owned by NOMA, an \u00a3800 million scheme partnered with The Co-operative Group, sadly called last orders back in 2015.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Ex-landlord&nbsp;Dave Foran says&nbsp;he is \u2018devastated\u2019 that the city will lose another landmark. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">He said: \u201cIt\u2019s such a shame because I have done so much in 15 years with bands here. I knew it was coming and it\u2019s business at the end of the day.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Liam Howard from Hydes Brewery said that pubs are not given enough support: \u201cThere needs to be changes in VAT and alcohol duty to favour pubs ahead of supermarkets so it becomes more affordable to go to the pub.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">\u201cVisiting the pub is still one of the top things people like to do in their leisure time but it is currently much cheaper to drink at home.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">&#8220;It has to be remembered that pubs employ a lot of people\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1975\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/map_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"679\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/map_0.jpg 679w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/map_0-212x300.jpg 212w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 679px) 100vw, 679px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1976\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/pub_closures_in_england_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"843\" height=\"598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/pub_closures_in_england_0.jpg 843w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/pub_closures_in_england_0-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/01\/pub_closures_in_england_0-768x545.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 843px) 100vw, 843px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">User-inspired civic movement <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcrshield.co.uk\/\">Manchester Shield<\/a> started the petition to prevent the demolition of the pub and protect Manchester\u2019s heritage.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Adam Prince from the group said: &#8220;The Ducie Bridge&nbsp;is not only important in its own right but is also symbolic of so many different things wrong with how planning is undertaken in Manchester. I have been there several times of the live music venue and also think the 1892 pub is beautiful and certainly is not beyond repair. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">&#8220;NOMA gave me a very convoluted story and can&#8217;t give me any figures for repair or what is wrong with the building.&nbsp;Their vision is bland and short-term where the people\u2019s history does not matter.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">&#8220;The notion this building has to be demolished so they can be landbanked the future development, which people probably won\u2019t even get a say in, is appalling. The political support has been appalling. Emails are ignored and the petition has received no political support either from local councillors.&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">&#8220;The approach is as disingenuous as it is short-sighted and we learn every day of new pending demolitions. It is a disrespect of heritage, history, businesses, idiosyncrasy, the live music scene, the streetscape and assets that could be used by communities.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.66px;\"><font face=\"Calibri\">The NOMA vision is to create a \u2018new 20 acre neighbourhood where you can live, work, create and innovate\u2019 with 250,000 sq&nbsp;ft of offices, shops and homes across the road from Victoria Station.
