The modern-day indie-pop legends are renowned nationwide for their synth-driven indie floor fillers, and they certainly didn\u2019t fail to provide even more on this new record. The band recently left their record deal with Universal Music Operations to set up their own label ODD SK Recordings.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/11\/Gary.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/11\/Gary.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/11\/Gary-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/11\/Gary-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2024\/11\/Gary-768x768.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gary Album Cover &#8211; Credit: Ewan Ogden<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The unrelentingly groovy <em>Gary<\/em>, named after a fibreglass statue of a gorilla that was stolen from a garden centre in Scotland, is kickstarted by <em>Big Star<\/em>. Setting the scene for the rest of the half an hour of head-bopping that follows, the album opener is classic Blossoms earworm that you\u2019ll be humming for the next half an hour after the album is over.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second track, <em>What Can I Say After I\u2019m Sorry?<\/em> along with <em>Nightclub<\/em>, are two indie dance-floor hits produced by Josh Lloyd-Watson of Jungle fame, who clearly smeared the perfect amount of his band\u2019s pop magic onto those two songs.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The title track may not be my ultimate favourite on the album, but it is a masterpiece that ties the entire thing together. Frontman Tom Ogden read an article on a lost statue and wrote a song about it. It\u2019s silly and absurd, but it\u2019s a hit, and I\u2019ve been singing it for months. For me, <em>Gary<\/em> the song is what makes <em>Gary<\/em> the album so good. It\u2019s a reminder that not everything has to be serious. It\u2019s an album where every song makes you want to sing and dance and forget the world around you for half an hour. Blossoms are now bona fide indie-pop heroes, and this album solidifies that.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I Like Your Look<\/em> is the standout track. Assisted by Irish pop icon CMAT, a slightly left-field, almost spoken-word tune about flares and designer fashion brands with arguably the biggest singalong chorus on the whole record.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Perfect Me<\/em> might just be the ultimate Blossoms\u2019 track. It is so Blossoms, but they do it so well. I also haven\u2019t seen anywhere near enough love for <em>Cinnamon<\/em> or <em>Mothers<\/em> since release day, because they\u2019re now two of my absolute favourite Blossoms songs ever. In fact, all ten tracks might be my favourite Blossoms tracks ever.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For its entire runtime, <em>Gary<\/em> is just pure indie-pop bliss. It\u2019s short and sweet. It\u2019s fun. It\u2019s got some of their best songs in their entire discography and certainly doesn\u2019t have any bad ones. It\u2019s Blossoms\u2019 crowning moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are still making hits ten years in, and they show no signs of slowing down.\u00a0\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are now embarking on a sold-out UK tour this autumn and have announced three outdoor summer shows across the country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stockport\u2019s greatest exports since Fred Perry, Blossoms, have returned with their fifth studio album, Gary.
