{"id":21621,"date":"2025-04-02T15:10:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-02T14:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/?p=21621"},"modified":"2025-04-03T08:24:33","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T07:24:33","slug":"students-call-for-bleed-control-training-in-greater-manchester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/students-call-for-bleed-control-training-in-greater-manchester\/","title":{"rendered":"Students call for bleed control training in Greater Manchester\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Students&nbsp;in Greater Manchester have called for mandatory bleeding control education in schools, in support of the Meros World Foundation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A group of students at the Altrincham Grammar Schools for Girls started a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/implement-mandatory-bleeding-control-education-in-greater-manchester-schools?source_location=search\">Change.org petition<\/a> to bring in mandatory bleeding control education in schools, in the hope that more education may save lives in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Partnering with the charity <a href=\"https:\/\/firstgive.co.uk\/\">First Give<\/a>, the project encourages students to create projects to support charities of their choosing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students are aiming to raise \u00a3500 to buy a bleed control cabinet that will help stem wounds in the event of a stabbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also plan to hold a week of fundraising events at their school where they will educate people on how to stem bleeds, with funds raised going towards both the bleed control cabinet and the Meros World Foundation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to NQ, one of the students, Emma, said: \u201cWe think knife crime is a really serious issue and not much attention is being paid to it. All of our products are U.S. DoD approved, so you can be sure that everything will work when you need it most. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cEwiW3J9ob\">pic.twitter.com\/cEwiW3J9ob<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Stop the Bleed Coalition (@Stopthebleedcoa) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Stopthebleedcoa\/status\/1879985170922840370?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 16, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>                        <\/div>\n\n                                            <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    \n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Knife crime is more common than we think&#8221;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another student at the school, Kardawiyah, highlighted knife cime as a serious issue. \u201cKnife crime is more common than we think,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It can happen to anyone at any time, so we should always be prepared.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students hope their fundraising event will eventually turn into an annual Knife Crime Awareness Week  &#8211; the first of its kind at the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evie, who started the bleeding control education fundraiser, said: \u201c[Bleed control training] should be a part of the school&#8217;s curriculum for all schools and taken to Parliament.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meros World Foundation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Meros World Foundation was established by Kelly Brown, who lost her teenage son to knife crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rhamero West, was 16 years old when he was chased by three men and stabbed after his first day of college in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2025\/03\/Kelly-Browns-son.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2025\/03\/Kelly-Browns-son.webp 976w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2025\/03\/Kelly-Browns-son-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2025\/03\/Kelly-Browns-son-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rhamero West | Credit: Family handout<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The charity focusses on raising&nbsp;awareness of the dangers of knife crime, and currently is currently campaigning to&nbsp;install more bleed control cabinets around Manchester &#8211; including in schools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far they have installed 60  cabinets across the city, and are currently working towards making bleeding control training a&nbsp;mandatory part of first aid training in schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DGimWoSqSwL\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\">Kelly visited parliament<\/a> to share her story with MPs, and hopes that they will stick to their word and come forward with the help and support that they promised.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt shouldn&#8217;t be taking a mum who has lost her son to be putting cabinets on every street corner,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The council should be stepping up and dipping into their funding to help support us with this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKnife crime isn\u2019t going away anytime soon, which is really sad to see.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"739\" height=\"554\" src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2025\/03\/50309e4b-2c1c-40a0-b863-7618774afca6-edited.jpeg\" alt=\"Kelly Brown, a white woman with long brown hair in a half-ponytail, stands with one arm against an emergency bleed control kit. hope they will know how to save someone&#8217;s life in a stabbing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly said she was proud to hear about the work the girls are doing in supporting her foundation, and that the passion the students showed in bringing change was something more people should get on board with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople don\u2019t wake up to see how important knife crime is until it&#8217;s too late or it\u2019s happened to them, and the more we pull together as a community to unite, the more powerful we are at preventing it,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Prevention save stab victims, but could also be used to save the lives of car crash victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly has also given talks at various primary schools &#8211; with knife crime affecting younger and younger people, she believes that speaking to people at a younger age may help prevent future incidents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If I can change one person&#8217;s mindset, I\u2019m doing something right,&#8221; she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Foundation set up a Youth Club in Fallowfield in 2022 to give local children a safe place to socialise and be themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the long term, she said she would like the Foundation to have their own building with counsellors and mentors, and to see it expanded into a safe space for children and families to go
