{"id":22458,"date":"2025-11-25T19:38:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T19:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/?p=22458"},"modified":"2025-11-26T09:28:36","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T09:28:36","slug":"uninsured-drivers-make-manchester-top-10-hotspot-in-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/uninsured-drivers-make-manchester-top-10-hotspot-in-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Uninsured drivers put Manchester in the top 10 hotspots for accidents in UK"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An operation to crack down on uninsured drivers in Manchester has been led by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) after Manchester was ranked the eighth worst hotspot nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmp.police.uk\/contentassets\/2f3cad05ea6b47e297845fee1111c30f\/seized.jpg\" alt=\"Seized.jpg\" style=\"width:457px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation aims to eliminate road deaths and life-changing injuries by 2040 as part of Vision Zero strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sergeant Rebecca McElroy, of GMP&#8217;s roads policing unit,&nbsp;said: \u201cAccording to MIB statistics, one person is killed every week by an uninsured driver, and every 20 minutes someone is hit by one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery day, someone suffers life-changing injuries because of this crime. Driving without insurance is not acceptable. It\u2019s six penalty points and a fine, but more importantly, it\u2019s about doing what\u2019s right and keeping our roads safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The safety initiative saw police performing inspections on vehicles, which resulted in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>88 vehicles stopped<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5 vehicles seized<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 driver arrested for drug driving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally there were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>17 for seatbelt offences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>7 for mobile phone use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>8 for number plate violations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>7 for illegal window tints<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4 for driving without insurance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 for driving without a licence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 drug-driving arrest under Section 5A<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 search under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Kate Green, deputy mayor of Greater Manchester, said: \u201cUninsured driving is not a victimless crime. It puts people in danger and contributes to collisions that can tear lives apart. Recent figures show Manchester\u2019s M18 area ranked among the UK\u2019s worst uninsured hotspots&nbsp;\u2013 a stark reminder of why&nbsp;targeted enforcement is so important&nbsp;to keep everyone safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our Vision Zero ambition is clear: no one should be killed or seriously injured on Greater Manchester\u2019s roads.
