These treatments have given hope to people with advanced or hard-to-treat cancers, but for some patients they can cause severe side effects that can be frightening and life-changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Researchers at The Christie are launching a new study to help patients better tolerate cutting-edge immunotherapy treatments, such as CAR-T. <br><br>It&#39;s the first programme of its kind in the UK and the culmination of 30 years of global research.<br><br>More<br>\ud83d\udc49 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Erk0bq5ISM\">https:\/\/t.co\/Erk0bq5ISM<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NOQQnciv7U\">pic.twitter.com\/NOQQnciv7U<\/a><\/p>&mdash; The Christie NHS (@TheChristieNHS) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TheChristieNHS\/status\/2000657662141157813?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 15, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme, called&nbsp;<strong>RISE<\/strong>&nbsp;(Research Into Safer and Effective Immunotherapies), brings together NHS staff from across Greater Manchester, researchers, patient representatives and industry partners. Elkie underwent CAR-T therapy after being diagnosed with severe leukaemia. Slowly I got back to normal, but it was very scary, and for months after I had terrible memory and anxiety and still felt a bit disoriented.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the ordeal, Elkie describes the treatment as nothing short of a miracle. She had been given very low odds of survival because of how advanced her illness was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was given very low odds of the CAR-T being successful due to the severity of my leukaemia, so it really was a miracle that it worked,\u201d she said. \u201cIf I was able to do that without the side effects it would have been a lot easier on my body.
