{"id":23065,"date":"2026-01-27T14:37:29","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T14:37:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/?p=23065"},"modified":"2026-01-27T14:38:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T14:38:16","slug":"wythenshawes-simply-cycling-put-off-track-by-a-year-for-park-redevelopments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wythenshawes-simply-cycling-put-off-track-by-a-year-for-park-redevelopments\/","title":{"rendered":"Wythenshawe&#8217;s Simply Cycling put off track by a year for park redevelopments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Simply Cycling, a Manchester charity organisation, is about to be relocated and taken off their usual track for 12 months, following planning approvals to redevelop Wythenshawe Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply Cycling, a small self-funded charity, will be forced to leave its regular track while construction takes place on new facilities including a caf\u00e9, cycle hub, changing rooms and a GP clinic. The charity says it has not been provided with a suitable alternative location to continue its sessions during the redevelopment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wythenshawe Park site is Simply Cycling\u2019s main base, hosting between 300 and 400 riders each week. Many users rely on specialist adapted bikes and enclosed spaces to cycle safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liz, a board member of Simply Cycling, said communication with the council had been frustrating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were banging our heads against a brick wall \u2014 no one was listening,\u201d she said. \u201cThen suddenly at the planning meeting they said they\u2019d try to sort something out, but I don\u2019t believe them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Liz said she supports the redevelopment of the park, she believes the charity has been sidelined. \u201cI\u2019m not against what\u2019s happening at Wythenshawe Park, but they can\u2019t just ignore us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply Cycling has three locations: one in Wythenshawe, one in Stretford, and one in Boggart Hole Clough in north Manchester. The council suggested to the management that users attend another location during the closure of the track, but transport is a major barrier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOften, our users don\u2019t have transport,\u201d Liz said, warning that moving the sessions elsewhere could exclude many riders entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many riders travel with carers or family members and depend on the enclosed track for safety, and some users have complex needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes we have very vulnerable young people who need three or four carers with them,\u201d she said. \u201cChildren with autism need an enclosed, safe space for fresh air. Some of these kids don\u2019t get outside all week until they come to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the charity had suggested practical alternatives, including installing a temporary track within the park. \u201cI\u2019m sure they could put down a temporary track, like they do for lorries,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply Cycling previously funded and installed its own kitchen near the track to provide hot drinks for riders, further embedding the charity at the site.
