Local illustrators have turned Manchester’s streets into\u00a0a music themed\u00a0open-air\u00a0gallery ahead of the Brit awards this weekend.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To celebrate the BRIT Awards on Saturday,\u00a0six talented illustrators – all Man Met graduates – were chosen to help transform the city centre into a spectacular gallery.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanley Chow, renowned artist, launched the citywide trail project to celebrate Manchester\u2019s vibrant creative community in the build-up to this weekend\u2019s BRITs.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the concept of love and singer Olivia Dean\u2019s latest album to the suffragettes and rock band Amyl and the Sniffers, the installations were all inspired by Manchester\u2019s cultural roots and by this year\u2019s nominations for the iconic BRITs.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking place for the first time in Manchester, the 2026 BRIT Awards will see thousands of fans flocking to the city\u2019s Co-Op Live venue for the main event on Saturday, and to the city\u2019s Northern Quarter and Ancoats areas this week to take part in the specially curated art trail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jessica Lee,\u00a0full-time freelance illustrator and Manchester Met graphic design graduate, was one of the artists chosen by Chow to create a large-scale installation\u00a0for the trail titled\u00a0\u2018The\u00a0Art of Loving\u2019,\u00a0which is now on display in Lever Street.\u00a0Inspired by the BRIT nominee Olivia Dean\u2019s album of the same name, the colourful installation explores the concept of love. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lee said: \u201cI wanted to capture the many different emotions of the album through my character work. Each heart character represents a different emotion. It explores how love comes in so many different forms.\u202fI think her album\u202fis a beautiful reminder that love is all around us and in the current state of the world we could all\u202fuse a bit of love, spread a bit of\u202flove\u202fand try to find joy in the\u202flittle things\u202fof life.\u201d  <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Feminism and Manchester\u2019s suffragette movement were the inspirations behind illustrator Barney Ibbotson’s bold billboard takeover titled \u2018U Should Not Be Doing That\u2019.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a direct reference to BRIT International Group of the Year nominees Amyl and the Sniffers, Ibbotson\u2019s dramatic Peak Street piece links Emeline Pankhurst and Manchester\u2019s suffragette legacy with lead singer Amy Taylor\u2019s loud and unapologetic feminism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ibbotson said: \u201cI pieced my artwork together out\u202fof\u202fall these different elements and there are lots of symbols.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI added the arches of the Free Trade Hall along the bottom where the\u202fWomen\u2019s Social and Political Union used to have their meetings. At the top\u202fyou\u2019ve\u202fgot modern day Manchester with the high-rise buildings, so\u202fthere\u2019s\u202fa bridge between the ages.\u202f  <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are more references to the suffragettes with the tricolour flag they used to fly, and the toffee hammers they used to smash windows as an act of disruption.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Florence Burns, an\u00a0Illustration with\u00a0animation graduate\u00a0from Manchester Met, created a piece titled\u00a0\u2018DISRUPT\u2019\u00a0depicting a high heeled shoe on a drum foot pedal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said:\u00a0\u201cDISRUPT\u202femerged\u202ffrom thinking about visibility and who has historically been centred within music culture.\u202fIt\u2019s\u202fa tribute to the women and non-binary people (past, present, and future) demanding to be heard and taken seriously against male-dominated power structures – and those with intersecting identities who face even more bias.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other large-scale illustrations in the trail created by impressive illustrators include famous Mancunian pubs, detailed planetary forms and a lyric from rock band Wet Leg, among other rock-inspired imagery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
