His body was found the following day by divers searching the Rochdale Canal.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"2819\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/sites\/default\/files\/charlie.jpg\" title=\"19-year-old Charlie Pope\" width=\"540\"><figcaption>Charlie Pope<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Charlie\u2019s father Nick, 53, came down from their home in Ponteland, Northumberland, to join more than 100 rallying protesters.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cMost people seem positive to try and do what they can do improve the safety [on the canals]. With the exception of the Canals and River Trust who really don\u2019t seem to want to change anything at all and seem to be stuck in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir concerns seem to rest solely with the boaters on the canal as opposed to the safety of the people around it. Now there are a lot more people who come to the canal, who go to the bars, restaurants, and clubs. And they don\u2019t seem to have any concern for their safety and welfare whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;Make Charlie the last campaign&#8217;&nbsp;was started by Alona Ainsworth, 29, from Salford, who was moved by the death the university student.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2413\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/05\/30442651_1891045227595985_4338783242388766720_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/05\/30442651_1891045227595985_4338783242388766720_n.jpg 750w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2018\/05\/30442651_1891045227595985_4338783242388766720_n-300x114.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She started the petition because she felt nothing was being done to stop preventable incidents.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cThere\u2019s at least two deaths reported a year of people falling into the waterways around Manchester.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This has happened in other cities and things have been done about it but we\u2019re just letting it continue here without nothing being done<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/put-barriers-up-on-the-manchester-canals\">petition<\/a>&nbsp;has nearly 55,000 signatures so far.<\/p>\n<p>After a minute&#8217;s silence was held for Charlie, Mr Pope and protesters marched to Rochdale Canal where he urged the crowd to \u201cnot give up\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\" style=\"float:right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"3\" data-fid=\"2821\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"209\" src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/sites\/default\/files\/screen_shot_2018-05-27_at_18.43.33_copy.jpg\" title=\"Laura McCann\" width=\"180\"><figcaption>Laura McCann<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Laura McCann, 29, was one of many to travel from the North East for the march.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cOne person dying is too much. No one should be dying there. He was a 19-year-old boy, he had his whole life ahead of him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just very sad, and it shouldn\u2019t be allowed to happen. Make it safe and stop someone else from dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A total of 76 bodies have been discovered in the canals and waterways of Greater Manchester since 2007, according to research carried out by the Sunday Times.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Worthington, 69, who spends his days on the&nbsp;canal around Ancoats, said tragic incidents such as Charlie\u2019s death were a&nbsp;rarity.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe canal system is as safe as it can ever be. It\u2019s just on certain occasions things can go wrong,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think the canal system can be bettered.
