Located in the heart of Levenshulme, Cringle Park is a green space for families, dog owners and everyone alike to enjoy.<\/p>\n

But during the winter months the park loses its appeal due to the lack of lighting, making it an unsafe environment for families and residents from the local community.<\/p>\n

Two years ago, a 31-year-old woman was raped in broad daylight while she was out on a walk around her local park, Cringle Park.<\/p>\n

The sickening atack struck a chord with the local community in Levenshulme and hundreds of residents joined in a \u2018Walk Without Fear\u2019 around Cringle Park, to show solidarity towards the victim. Police presence increased during the following month to reassure the community.<\/p>\n

But to date there have been no long-term solutions put in place to help make Cringle Park a safe area for all.<\/p>\n

The Light Up Cringle Park campaign is trying to change that.<\/p>\n

The aim of the campaign is to make the council aware of the issue of safety in Cringle Park. We are calling for effective lighting initiatives to be introduced in and around Cringle Park.<\/p>\n

In a briefing<\/a> released by the College Of Policing, it was found that improved lighting \u201cwas associated with a reduction in crime of 21%\u201d. Having improved lighting is a key factor to deterring crime and antisocial behaviour in local communities.<\/p>\n

By introducing better lighting in the park and having key areas well lit, such as pathways, pedestrians can be clearly visible and reassured that they will not be targets of crime. With better lighting also comes more community involvement, as social areas of the park will be available to be used after 4 pm during winter.<\/p>\n
