Endometriosis UK<\/a>, the UK\u2019s leading endometriosis charity, runs support groups across the whole of Britain and Northern Ireland. These support groups allow those living with the chronic condition the chance to meet other people who are affected with endometriosis – an opportunity for them to share their experiences of living with the condition.<\/p>\n

Endo Aware recently caught up with the group leader for the Manchester support group, Antonia, and fellow volunteer Amanda, to get an insight into how these support groups benefit those living with endometriosis.<\/p>\n

Antonia was diagnosed with endometriosis in 2014 and took the volunteering role as Manchester\u2019s support group leader as a way to give back to the charity, who had helped her post diagnosis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw that they (Endometriosis UK) were advertising for a group leader for Manchester, so I thought I might do that \u2013 I\u2019ll give something back because I felt they\u2019d been so helpful to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since taking on the voluntary role in 2017, Antonia runs the monthly meetings where those affected can relax with a tea or coffee and share their experiences with endometriosis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll just get everyone to say their name, but people don\u2019t have to tell their life story, it\u2019s just say a little hello \u2013 tea and coffee and then I just leave it open in terms of what people want to talk about. It\u2019s very fluid \u2013 I think people genuinely feel quite relaxed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Offering Antonia support with the group is Amanda, who was diagnosed with endometriosis over a year ago. Amanda helps Antonia promote the events which the support group run, as well as attending the meetings for her own benefit.<\/p>\n

Amanda said: \u201cI think just the social contact is good for your health \u2013 if you\u2019re feeling isolated it\u2019s good to have people to talk to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had some members who have just come and they\u2019re quiet and they don\u2019t say much, and that\u2019s fine \u2013 it\u2019s whatever you want to get from it, because sometimes just hearing other people can help somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Antonia has alternated the locations for the group meetings, hosting them at caf\u00e9\u2019s and libraries, to pubs and even weekend walks \u2013 as a way of making the group more sociable, as Amanda would say.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s good to demystify what a support group is and maybe call it more of a social.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The group has also been given educational talks through various experts, who volunteer as guest speakers at the meetings.<\/p>\n

From December the group will be involved in a 12 week art project led by START<\/a>, an organisation who help people cope with their health problems through creative art.<\/p>\n

Antonia sees this project as being a way to take people\u2019s minds off their condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you do something and you create something you get into a flow, so your mind can kind of let go of all the worries that you\u2019ve got, but also you create something at the end of it, so you come away with a sense of achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n

The attendance levels at the support groups vary from a few people to 20 people as Antonia added.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes the group is quite small, but you still often have quite an interesting discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amanda would mention how the women, even though they are all affected differently by the condition, share the connection of living with endometriosis.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are all so different at the group, we\u2019ve all got different symptoms, different treatments going on, but then there\u2019s still a connection that we\u2019ve all got.\u201d<\/p>\n

The monthly meetings take place at the Parkway 3, Parkway Business Centre, Princess Road, Manchester, M14 7LU, and usually take place on a Tuesday evening from 18:30-20:00 – but people can come and go as they please.<\/p>\n
