{"id":3624,"date":"2019-05-24T13:38:34","date_gmt":"2019-05-24T12:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2019\/05\/24\/eu-elections-2019-view-young-people-netherlands\/"},"modified":"2019-05-24T13:38:34","modified_gmt":"2019-05-24T12:38:34","slug":"eu-elections-2019-view-young-people-netherlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/eu-elections-2019-view-young-people-netherlands\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Elections 2019: a view from young people in the Netherlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>European Elections<\/strong> are underway and over the next few days, citizens of the 28 EU member states will vote to elect members of the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>In the same way the <strong>UK Parliamen<\/strong>t is a check on the UK government, the <strong>European Parliament<\/strong> acts as a check on the <strong>European Commission <\/strong>who create legislation that affects all member states.<\/p>\n<p>Voting will be taking finish on Sunday with many of the current 28 EU states electing to hold votes on separate days.&nbsp; The UK and Netherlands were the first to take to the polling booths to cast their votes despite an uncertain future for the UK as a member state and Theresa May&#8217;s resignation announcement.<\/p>\n<p>In the Netherlands, as in the UK, voting figures are historically lower in European elections compared to&nbsp;national ones. However, with surveys suggesting a rise in nationalism across Europe and prominent far-right politician Thierry Baudet proposing a Dutch exit from the European Union or \u2018Nexit\u2019, it seems that the EU elections could be more impactful than many believe.<\/p>\n<p>Students from Hogeschool Utrecht were able to cast their votes on university campus.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"blob:https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/48e9332d-48d8-4bcc-a92e-642d59abfe92\">It\u2019s clear that for them, environmental issues are an important factor in how they voted. Progressiveness is important for<em> Sammie Vries,<\/em> who said \u201cI voted for the Groen Links (Green Lefts) because they are positive and pro-environment and they\u2019re progressive. They\u2019re also pro-EU!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-3622\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2019\/05\/25a55ee8-cd05-467c-b993-646d752ab591.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1136\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2019\/05\/25a55ee8-cd05-467c-b993-646d752ab591.jpeg 1136w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2019\/05\/25a55ee8-cd05-467c-b993-646d752ab591-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2019\/05\/25a55ee8-cd05-467c-b993-646d752ab591-1024x577.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2019\/05\/25a55ee8-cd05-467c-b993-646d752ab591-768x433.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1136px) 100vw, 1136px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While&nbsp;the environment has been a key topic of debate in the&nbsp;elections, other students were more concerned about policies that affected them personally.<\/p>\n<p>Menen-Claire Seijken<em>s<\/em> said&nbsp;that because students receive loans and travel is free for them, it meant&nbsp;that when politicians plan to remove these benefits it\u2019s important to vote.
