{"id":3665,"date":"2019-06-14T14:45:41","date_gmt":"2019-06-14T13:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2019\/06\/14\/grenfell-fire-two-years-many-buildings-greater-manchester-still-have-dangerous-cladding\/"},"modified":"2022-09-16T15:15:36","modified_gmt":"2022-09-16T14:15:36","slug":"grenfell-fire-two-years-many-buildings-greater-manchester-still-have-dangerous-cladding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/grenfell-fire-two-years-many-buildings-greater-manchester-still-have-dangerous-cladding\/","title":{"rendered":"Grenfell Fire &#8211; two years on, but many buildings in Greater Manchester still have dangerous cladding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks the two year anniversary of the Grenfell tower fire which tragically took the lives of 72 people and displaced multiple families&nbsp;out of their homes.<\/p>\n<p>The tragedy brought focus onto&nbsp;fire safety and building construction.&nbsp;It recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehousing.co.uk\/news\/pms-chief-of-staff-did-not-act-on-multiple-warnings-about-fire-safety-in-months-before-grenfell-new-letters-show-61883\">emerged<\/a>&nbsp;that concerns around&nbsp;the safety of these buildings were&nbsp;raised with senior politicians just&nbsp;weeks before the Grenfell&nbsp;fire with<a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehousing.co.uk\/news\/pms-chief-of-staff-did-not-act-on-multiple-warnings-about-fire-safety-in-months-before-grenfell-new-letters-show-61883\"> Inside Housing reporting <\/a>that politicians&nbsp;failed to act.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"340\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/spark.adobe.com\/video\/BPk267ckN8ErW\/embed\" width=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The ongoing Grenfell inquiry will examins such claims and any&nbsp;individual failings that led to the deadly&nbsp;fire.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since the disaster, the government has spent&nbsp;\u00a3600m&nbsp;removing dangerous Grenfell-style ACM cladding from buildings around the UK. Despite this there are still 328&nbsp;buildings covered in&nbsp;such cladding,&nbsp;including many within Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pendleton Together\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"4838\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"373\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2019\/06\/screenshot_2019-05-10_at_20.12.20.png\" title=\"Pendleton Together\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Salford based &#8216;Pendleton Together&#8217; residential blocks which still have ACM cladding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>ACM cladding is just one of many types of flammable cladding on high rise buildings.&nbsp;The government is currently testing other products such as High Pressure Laminates (HPL) to assess the dangers posed.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Jonathan Evan who was part of the team testing the Grenfell-style cladding told the BBC that&nbsp;some non-ACM&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-48387380\">products are &#8220;destined to fail<\/a>&#8220;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tower block&nbsp;residents are currently unable to access funds to replace non-ACM cladding despite being subject to legal notices by fire and rescue services. This has led to individual residents footing the bill.<\/p>\n<p>The number of buildings potentially affected by non-ACM cladding runs into the thousands.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week Grenfell United, the campaign group set up by survivors of the Grenfell fire<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2019\/06\/13\/we-dont-want-people-experience-same-pain-we-did-survivor-grenfell-tower-visits-salford\/\"> visited the NV building<\/a> in Salford Quays. They projected the plight of the residents onto the dangerous cladding hope to raise awareness.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Grenfell United projection\" data-delta=\"3\" data-fid=\"4839\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"450\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2019\/06\/img_9288-scaled.jpg\" title=\"Grenfell United projection\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Grenfell Uniteds projection on the NV building<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2017 the NV building was assessed and found to have dangerous non-ACM cladding and faults with the building&#8217;s fire blocks which form&nbsp;part of the fire system.<\/p>\n<p>Residents are still living with the flammable cladding and last week received bills up to \u00a330,000 to replace the cladding as the building\u2019s owners have&nbsp;refused to pay.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"NV Building\" data-delta=\"4\" data-fid=\"4840\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"450\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2019\/06\/img_9226_0-scaled.jpg\" title=\"NV Buildings\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>NV Building in Salford Quays<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NV resident Phil Morgan said: &#8220;There is a case for the government to pay for that. Our frustration is that when you buy a&nbsp;house you expect it to be safe. But to be told after that that it\u2019s not safe and&nbsp;expected to be&nbsp;paid to put it right it\u2019s very frustrating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Builders were happy to create these building with this cladding, they thought it was ok to use.&nbsp;They pocket the profit so there is responsibility on the builders and they should think about&nbsp;what they were doing&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We spoke to Tiago Alves, a survivor of the Grenfell fire and member of Grenfell United during his visit to the NV building.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tiago Alvers\" data-delta=\"2\" data-fid=\"4835\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"602\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2019\/06\/tiago.jpg\" title=\"Tiago Alvers\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Tiago Alvers, survivor of Grenfell fire and member of Grenfell United<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He said:&nbsp;It does not make a difference if it is ACM or non-ACM. If it is flammable it is flammable<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor many years the construction industry has cut corners especially around fire safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tiago and residents of the NV building we spoke to called for all high rise and high risk buildings to have the most stringent safety checks to detect these \u201ccut corners\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Residents of NV building\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"4842\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"450\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2019\/06\/img_9249-scaled.jpg\" title=\"Residents of NV building\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Residents of NV building<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hyde Homes, a public&nbsp;housing authority&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehousing.co.uk\/home\/home\/hyde-found-fire-safety-problems-with-all-86-of-its-tower-blocks-61228\">conducted &#8216;Level 4 fire risk assessments&#8217;<\/a> on all of their high-rise tower blocks, with all 86&nbsp;found to have issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hyde Homes\" data-delta=\"2\" data-fid=\"4843\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"290\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2019\/06\/hyde.jpg\" title=\"Hyde Homes\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Hyde Homes social housing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These issues, including missing fire blocks, have also been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-48113301\">found on new build homes<\/a> and&nbsp;tower blocks such as the NV building.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The level 4 risk assessment will check all aspects of the buildings fire defences and will ensure the building was built and maintained to standard.<\/p>\n<p>Tiago added:&nbsp;\u201cI feel like that (real change) can only happen after phase one and two of the Grenfell inquiry have finished followed by the criminal investigation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Only when they realise that something like this will become criminal and the regulations change, will that be enough to scare the building industry into not cutting corners and will stop them putting themselves in a position where something like Grenfell can happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hyde Homes has&nbsp;set a precedent, being responsible landlords&nbsp;protecing their residents&nbsp;allowing them to sleep at night knowing that they are safe.&nbsp;Until these checks have&nbsp;all been carried&nbsp;out it will be impossible to know how many buildings in the UK have similar&nbsp;safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The governement is set out to put in place the&nbsp;recommendations&nbsp;of the Hackett report over the next few years and only time will tell if these go far enough.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Additional reporting by Alex Candlin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks the two year anniversary of the Grenfell tower fire which tragically took the lives of 72 people and displaced multiple families&nbsp;out of their&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1269,"featured_media":3659,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_uf_show_specific_survey":0,"_uf_disable_surveys":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4973,1],"tags":[3388,3389,3387],"class_list":["post-3665","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-features","category-uncategorised","tag-cladding","tag-fire-safety","tag-grenfell"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.1 -
