{"id":4760,"date":"2020-10-01T16:49:53","date_gmt":"2020-10-01T15:49:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2020\/10\/01\/labour-members-react-sir-keir-starmers-first-conference-speech-leader\/"},"modified":"2020-10-01T16:49:53","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T15:49:53","slug":"labour-members-react-sir-keir-starmers-first-conference-speech-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/labour-members-react-sir-keir-starmers-first-conference-speech-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"Labour members react to Sir Keir Starmer&#8217;s first conference speech as leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Labour members have been left divided after Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s speech at this year\u2019s virtual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/uk-politics-54243968\">online<\/a> conference in Doncaster, outlining big changes to the future of the party.<\/p>\n<p>One statement from the new Labour leader, Sir Keir , which seems to have caused the most controversy among&nbsp;party members is the insinuation that Labour \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/dc896ea9-c55e-4169-b7ba-1a3759fc6db1\">deserved\u201d<\/a> to lose the 2019 election.<\/p>\n<p>Described by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/dc896ea9-c55e-4169-b7ba-1a3759fc6db1\">Financial Times<\/a> as a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/dc896ea9-c55e-4169-b7ba-1a3759fc6db1\">merciless repudiation of the Jeremy Corbyn era\u2019<\/a>, Sir Keir used his first official conference speech as Labour leader to argue that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-54241844\">when you lose an election in a democracy you deserve to. You don\u2019t look at the electorate and ask them: \u2018what were you thinking?\u2019,\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some Labour members took to twitter to voice their reactions on this statement.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Labour lost the last election because Starmer &amp; the vile creatures in the PLP wanted Labour to lose. They pushed for a People\u2019s Vote knowing it was the only way to get rid of Jeremy Corbyn.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tToday at conference Starmer stuck two fingers up at Labour activists who wanted to win.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 Ben (@BenJolly9) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenJolly9\/status\/1308485135273259008?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 22, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Rory Leonard, chair of Stockport Young Labour, said:&nbsp;\u201cKeir Starmer has shown himself to be far more competent than Johnson at PMQ\u2019s and I, like most left-wing members, feel that both Keir and Jeremy would have handled the response to the pandemic in a far better way than the shambolic and reckless way that Johnson has.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, while&nbsp;Keir\u2019s Connected speech may have ticked all the boxes in terms of voter hit-words thought up at Labour HQ, it ultimately lacked in policy and substance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no mention in the speech of the Tory\u2019s disgraceful outsourcing of Test and Trace, no mention of the Black Lives Matter movement \u2026 no mention of the fact the Tories have shamefully this week allowed the eviction ban to restart after a six month pause.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Councillor David Meller is a Labour councillor for Cheadle Hulme North in Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on Starmer\u2019s speech, he told NQ:&nbsp;\u201cFor me, it was an excellent speech. I think it was reflective and didn\u2019t just focus on where we\u2019ve perhaps gone wrong over the last five years, but over the last 10: we\u2019ve lost four General Elections in a row now and we need to address why we\u2019ve done so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t the fault of one leader or one faction: this has been an issue across the piece for some time now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s clear the fault doesn\u2019t lie with the electorate but with the party \u2013 we can\u2019t keep blaming the electorate for not getting the right results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir Starmer made clear that the party is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-54241844\">\u201cunder new leadership\u201d,<\/a> by promising members to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-54241844\">\u201cnever let Labour go in to an election not being trusted on national security, with your job, with your community and with your money. That\u2019s what being under leadership means.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This emphasis on \u2018new leadership\u2019 and national security seems to some that Sir Keir Starmer seeks to distance himself from the leadership of his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn, who was infamously named as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politicshome.com\/news\/article\/former-mi6-boss-labels-jeremy-corbyn-a-danger-to-national-security-unfit-to-lead-the-country\">\u2018a danger to national security\u2019<\/a> by a former Mi6 boss, Sir Richard Dearlove.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/trackers\/defence-and-security\">YouGov poll from December 2019<\/a> asking respondents which party they think would be best at handling defence and security found that only <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/trackers\/defence-and-security\">14%<\/a> answered the Labour party compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/trackers\/defence-and-security\">39%<\/a> for the Conservative party.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding national security, Councillor Meller said: \u201cI think on issues like defence and nationhood we have been found to be lacking for quite some time. We know our anti-austerity policies have been broadly popular but when it comes to people feeling they can trust us to keep them and this country safe, we\u2019ve been found wanting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While&nbsp;more recent figures (September 2020) show that this percentage has only risen to <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/trackers\/defence-and-security\">15%<\/a> for the Labour party since this new leadership, whilst falling to <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/trackers\/defence-and-security\">36%<\/a> for the Conservative party, Sir Keir&#8217;s new approach may set to improve this number for Labour.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the last Labour leadership contest, <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2020\/01\/18\/keir-starmer-beats-rebecca-long-bailey-63-37-secon\">YouGov<\/a> also found that <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2020\/01\/18\/keir-starmer-beats-rebecca-long-bailey-63-37-secon\">50%<\/a> of Labour members thought it was important for the leader to have a <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2020\/01\/18\/keir-starmer-beats-rebecca-long-bailey-63-37-secon\">sense of patriotism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir also used his conference speech to urge former Labour \u2018red wall\u2019 voters who largely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2019\/dec\/13\/labours-red-wall-demolished-by-tory-onslaught\">abandoned the party at the last election<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2020\/sep\/21\/keir-starmer-to-urge-red-wall-voters-to-take-another-look-at-labour#img-1\">\u201ctake another look at Labour\u2026we love this country as you do.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2020\/sep\/21\/keir-starmer-to-urge-red-wall-voters-to-take-another-look-at-labour#img-1\">\u201cMy vision for Britain is simple: I want this country to be the best country to grow up in and the best country to grow old in. A country in which we put family first.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>These statements follow reported \u2018concern\u2019 within the leader\u2019s team that the Labour party \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2020\/sep\/21\/keir-starmer-to-urge-red-wall-voters-to-take-another-look-at-labour#img-1\">had become too closely associated with critiquing the UK<\/a>\u2019, and aim to make the party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-53902845\">\u201cproud of being patriotic\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cllr Meller said: \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s anything wrong with being optimistic and proud of your country and if anything, by shrouding this with Labour values of equality, decency, fairness and what has worked well in recent years, it will help wrestle the flag, so to speak, away from the right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what Keir wants to demonstrate is by voting Labour, we can retain the union, be proud of our identity and with it, the Labour values attached to it as part of a government led by him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another recent <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2020\/09\/29\/voting-intention-con-41-lab-38-23-24-sep\">YouGov<\/a> poll found that Labour are closing the gap between the Conservatives and themselves, with voting intention figures showing <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2020\/09\/29\/voting-intention-con-41-lab-38-23-24-sep\">41%<\/a> for the Conservatives and <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2020\/09\/29\/voting-intention-con-41-lab-38-23-24-sep\">38%<\/a> for Labour.<\/p>\n<p>However, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2020\/09\/29\/voting-intention-con-41-lab-38-23-24-sep\">poll<\/a> over who would make the best Prime Minister, Sir Keir leads with <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2020\/09\/29\/voting-intention-con-41-lab-38-23-24-sep\">37%<\/a> agreeing he would make a better Prime Minister over Boris Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2020\/09\/29\/voting-intention-con-41-lab-38-23-24-sep\">(30%).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Regarding the recent polls, Rory Leonard said: \u201cwhilst it is obviously encouraging that Labour are now creeping ahead of the Tories in recent polls, it is essential that Keir keeps holding Johnson to account, and, more importantly, sticks to the left-wing pledges he made during the leadership campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe working class, and the millions struggling after 10 years of brutal Tory austerity and incompetence depend on this.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Labour members have been left divided after Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s speech at this year\u2019s virtual online conference in Doncaster, outlining big changes to&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1322,"featured_media":4759,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_uf_show_specific_survey":0,"_uf_disable_surveys":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4979,1],"tags":[2216,3829,1002],"class_list":["post-4760","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics","category-uncategorised","tag-boris-johnson","tag-keir-starmer","tag-labour-party"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.1 -
