{"id":4768,"date":"2020-10-02T16:10:46","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T15:10:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2020\/10\/02\/lgbtq-students-demand-more-university-support-online-learning-during-covid-crisis\/"},"modified":"2020-10-02T16:10:46","modified_gmt":"2020-10-02T15:10:46","slug":"lgbtq-students-demand-more-university-support-online-learning-during-covid-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/lgbtq-students-demand-more-university-support-online-learning-during-covid-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"LGBTQ+ students demand more university support for online learning during covid crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LGBTQ+ students say they are struggling with online learning and that social distancing restrictions are taking a toll on their mental health.<\/p>\n<p>While social distanced learning is a challenge for all students, it is particularly affecting those identifying as LGBTQ+, with&nbsp;many of them unable to rely on support networks outside their homes.<\/p>\n<p>Many young LGBTQ+ people feel more comfortable being \u201cout\u201d at university, especially those coming from a home environment that is unaccepting of their sexual and\/or gender identity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-4766\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2020\/10\/university_of_manchesters_accommodation_in_fallowfield.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2020\/10\/university_of_manchesters_accommodation_in_fallowfield.jpg 810w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2020\/10\/university_of_manchesters_accommodation_in_fallowfield-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2020\/10\/university_of_manchesters_accommodation_in_fallowfield-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The LGBT Foundation released a <a href=\"https:\/\/s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/lgbt-website-media\/Files\/237f78f1-e06c-46d7-ae08-1c9d5f9ca0bc\/The%2520Essential%2520Briefing%2520on%2520the%2520Impact%2520of%2520COVID-19%2520on%2520LGBT%2520Communities%2520in%2520the%2520UK%2520%2520-%25208%2520April%25202020.pdf\">study<\/a>&nbsp;earlier this year uncovering the disproportionate impact of the covid-19 crisis on various LGBT communities.<\/p>\n<p>Among the findings, the study highlights that \u201cBAME LGBT communities face greater need for access to mental health services, disabled communities have had a higher rate of medical appointments cancelled, and trans and non-binary people are twice as likely to feel unsafe where they are staying\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Tom, a second-year&nbsp;medicine student at the University of Manchester who identifies as bisexual,&nbsp;feels that his mood has been impacted by social-distanced learning.<\/p>\n<p>He believes that the support provided by his university for LGBTQ+ students is good enough, although other students have told him that it can be difficult to have access to the counselling service.<\/p>\n<p>Tom said: \u201cOther than talking to LGBT+ friends remotely, I do not feel that I have stayed connected to the LGBT+ community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the national lockdown was announced in March, Monisha was among thousands of students forced to finish their semester online.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-4767\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2020\/10\/the_university_of_manchester_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2020\/10\/the_university_of_manchester_0.jpg 500w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2020\/10\/the_university_of_manchester_0-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This term, out of 11 hours of class per week at the University of Manchester, seven are online. Monisha feels that her mental health has worsened as a result of so much of her time&nbsp;spent learning virtually in her room.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cI find myself feeling more anxious about leaving the house and going in for the little face-to-face teaching we do have as the people I am working with are practically strangers, as we have minimal interaction outside of university.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monisha claims LGBTQ+ students are not receiving enough support from the university. She thinks it would be helpful for universities to arrange freshers\u2019 meetings over Zoom for students to meet new people while&nbsp;in isolation.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cIt may be beneficial for the university to introduce and advertise a form of LGBTQ+-specific counselling for students who are currently trapped in non-supportive environments, such as homophobic households.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The University of Manchester was not available for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lgbt.foundation\/how-we-can-help-you\">LGBT Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theproudtrust.org\/for-young-people\/advice-and-support\/during-covid-19\/\">The Proud Trust<\/a>&nbsp;are offering various therapies and programmes for young LGBTQ+ people&nbsp;being impacted by the restrictions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LGBTQ+ students say they are struggling with online learning and that social distancing restrictions are taking a toll on their mental health.
