Manchester Central Food Bank<\/a> is ensuring that the mental health of vulnerable individuals is not forgotten during the pandemic. <\/p>\n

The charity has launched a campaign<\/a> with Manchester-based artist collective Get It Done<\/a> to provide 400 activity packs which will encourage mindfulness and wellbeing during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

The student-led food bank, which is part of the Trussell Trust<\/a> network, has been meeting the physical needs of central Manchester residents with emergency food packs since 2013.<\/p>\n

Despite this practical focus, project manager Lauren Tunnicliffe says \u201cmental and emotional support has always been really important to us\u201d, especially in this \u201creally strange time\u201d. She describes the Oxford Road food bank as \u201ccaf\u00e9 style\u201d, a space where clients can find a \u201cfriendly face and someone to chat to\u201d.<\/p>\n

Lauren said that partnering with Get It Done had been an \u201camazing opportunity to expand what we already do and the conversations we were already having\u201d.<\/p>\n

Artist Mimi Dearing<\/a>, who has been running creative programmes with Get It Done since 2017, had originally planned to partner with the food bank to host art workshops this summer.<\/p>\n

When the pandemic put plans on hold, Mimi and Lauren began to consider the impacts of isolation on food bank clients. Mimi said that \u201cthe arts have not been a priority during this period\u201d, concerned that \u201ca lot of people might not get the opportunity to be creative\u201d with libraries and museums closed.<\/p>\n

The organisations have worked together to create tailored activity packs which are \u201cmore than just an adult colouring book\u201d.<\/p>\n

The activities have a community focus and will encourage recipients to imagine their \u201cutopia\u201d through creative expression. Participants will also be interviewed about their experiences, creating an oral history to go alongside their artwork.<\/p>\n

Lauren said \u201cto be able to provide emotional support and an opportunity for clients to just do something for themselves is really valuable\u201d. The food bank has received praise from the Trussell Trust for the its focus on mental health during the Covid-19 crisis.<\/p>\n

Mimi says, although participants will have the opportunity to share their artwork, \u201cthere\u2019s no expectation- it\u2019s a free resource, and we just want to encourage people to be creative\u201d. Any artwork shared will contribute to an \u201carchive of narratives of poverty\u201d \u201camplifying voices that are too often unheard or ignored\u201d<\/a>. The pieces will also form part of exhibitions in Manchester Central Library and the Whitworth Gallery in 2021.<\/p>\n

Lauren and Mimi are hoping to raise \u00a32,000 to fund the project<\/a>, with each \u00a35 donation sponsoring a pack. They aim to begin sending packs out to participants before Christmas, and are \u201cjust so excited to see what comes out of this\u201d<\/p>\n
