The Greater Manchester region has been moved to Tier 3 restrictions by the government, putting hundreds of jobs and businesses at risk.<\/p>\n

New restrictions that were imposed on the region came into effect at midnight on Friday (23 October).<\/p>\n

In addition to the national rules, hospitality venues that cannot serve substantial meals will be forced to close.<\/p>\n

Households will also be forbidden from mixing in any indoor and many outdoor settings.<\/p>\n

The government has proposed \u00a322m of support for the region to improve \u201ctrack and trace\u201d programme.<\/p>\n

However, Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated that the money would be given directly to the leaders of Greater Manchester\u2019s boroughs \u2013 not via the leader of the region, Mayor Andy Burnham.<\/p>\n

Speaking to BBC North West<\/a>, Burnham said that the decision by the government to circumvent his authority was \u201cdisrespectful\u201d to the Manchester electorate who voted Burnham into power.<\/p>\n

An additional \u00a360m was also allocated the region to support businesses and employees having to be furloughed by the restrictions.<\/p>\n

However, Burnham argued that \u00a360m would continue to leave thousands of people without sufficient financial help.<\/p>\n

The restrictions have been met with anger by Manchester residents.<\/p>\n

Samantha Baldock, a 23-year-old call centre staff member, said that the extension of lockdown restrictions is taking a toll on her mental health.<\/p>\n

She said:  \u201cPersonally, I\u2019ve been working from home on my own since March and the fact there\u2019s more restrictions without any data to back it up makes me think it\u2019s never-ending.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe amount of money the region was given is not enough. We are the second largest city in the UK, we need more funding than that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Opposition towards the imposition of the restrictions is increasing. A demonstration against the introduction of the new rules is expected to take place in Picadilly Gardens tomorrow, with large crowds expected.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
