The Other in Mother,<\/a> <\/em>commissioned at the Arc centre in Stockport in 2018.<\/p>\nThe premise behind that exhibition was to \u201cseek out the theory of what happens to women during the transition into motherhood and the shift in identities\u201d. <\/p>\n
She said: \u201cManchester Art Gallery who were really keen on me doing the sessions and I managed to get funding from Comic Relief through the People\u2019s Postcode.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe originally planned on having them in the studio, so they were always going to happen but with Covid, it made the sessions more necessary and vital because so many women would be coping alone.\u201d<\/p>\n
The British Association of Art Therapists has art-therapy down as \u201ca form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication.\u201d <\/p>\n
Sarah added: \u201cIt can be quite tricky, because societally we have a very rosy view of motherhood, a narrative that you should be blessed and happy, but that\u2019s not all you can feel\u2026 feel loss of your old self, the intensity of new responsibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat a lot of mums don\u2019t have is the normalising of these feelings because they can\u2019t access all those groups. We are attempting with the art therapy to normalise some of the experiences that they will have.\u201d<\/p>\n
