healthcare workers concerned over delay of second Covid-19 vaccine dose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A hospital workers&#8217; union has expressed concern&nbsp;over the delay of the second Covid-19 vaccine dose&nbsp;being given to frontline healthcare workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Frontline staff in Manchester\u2019s hospitals were originally going to get their two doses within 28 days of each other, but that gap was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/hospitals-planning-delay-second-dose-19547307\">extended last month<\/a>&nbsp;and now doctors and nurses could be waiting for months between the two doses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcsa.com\">The Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association (HCSA)<\/a>&nbsp;has written to Matt Hancock after plans to give the two doses within 28 days of each other were scrapped in order to give a higher number of vulnerable people their first vaccine dose sooner.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-5257\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/01\/vaccine_2nd.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/01\/vaccine_2nd.jpg 612w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/01\/vaccine_2nd-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>HCSA general secretary Dr Paul Donaldson said: \u201cThis chaotic approach is creating huge anxiety on the ground&nbsp;and is illogical in the face of a lengthy second wave of Covid-19, which threatens to take a high percentage of staff away from the front line through sickness or self-isolation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are hearing that vulnerable hospital doctors at high risk from Covid have been told not to turn up for their second dose and therefore will not receive full protection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are now left in limbo by a hastily formulated policy which seems extremely ill-thought out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The HCSA is concerned the change could result in more frontline healthcare workers becoming ill, a point echoed by local hospital workers.<\/p>\n<p>A nurse from Royal Manchester Children\u2019s Hospital, who wished&nbsp;to remain anonymous, said she will have a \u201cmassive gap\u201d between doses and that she is \u201cworried that not being fully protected will make me a risk to my patients\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-5258\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/01\/vaccine_3rd.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/01\/vaccine_3rd.jpg 612w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/01\/vaccine_3rd-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Local healthcare worker Stephanie Vaughn, 47, said:&nbsp;\u201cThere is definitely a feeling of anxiety among&nbsp;healthcare workers in Manchester because of the delay of the second jab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it mainly comes down to the fact we just want as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible and we really just have to trust the government\u2019s plan and be patient with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe end is in sight and we must keep that in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/951928\/uk-covid-19-vaccines-delivery-plan-final.pdf\">government\u2019s vaccine delivery plan<\/a>&nbsp;currently states that all doctors and nurses should receive their first dose of the vaccine by mid-February.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A
