{"id":5313,"date":"2021-02-05T18:26:13","date_gmt":"2021-02-05T18:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2021\/02\/05\/closure-northern-quarter-street-traffic-sparks-contrasting-views-among-business-owners\/"},"modified":"2021-02-05T18:26:13","modified_gmt":"2021-02-05T18:26:13","slug":"closure-northern-quarter-street-traffic-sparks-contrasting-views-among-business-owners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/closure-northern-quarter-street-traffic-sparks-contrasting-views-among-business-owners\/","title":{"rendered":"Closure of Northern Quarter street to traffic sparks contrasting views among business owners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The city council has decided to permanently close Thomas Street as part of a new Northern Quarter cycling and walking scheme for&nbsp;summer 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The Northern Quarter can expect an \u00a311.6m walking and cycling route to facilitate active travel between Piccadilly and Victoria railway stations.<\/p>\n<p>Although it will be good news for people on the go, not everyone on the once-lively Thomas Street agrees with the changes.<\/p>\n<p>David Ellis, business owner of Cathedral Jewellers, is concerned about how pedestrianisation of Thomas Street will affect his business&nbsp;and the safety of his customers.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"2\" data-fid=\"6828\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"590\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/cathedral_jewellers_1.jpg\" title=\"Jeweller business on Thomas Street\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Thomas Street jewellers could be affected by the street closure to vehicles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"480\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1Zjpw74rrffvL3JuUpRMzb6uQVsY-76LL\" width=\"540\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>David said: \u201cBefore, our customers could just stop outside and run up with it [jewellery].<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great if you\u2019re in hospitality on this street, it seems like they\u2019re the only people that matter out there now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ellis has worked on Thomas Street for 40 years&nbsp;and feels the council has made the decision without considering businesses on the&nbsp;street.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cIt\u2019s going to&nbsp;mess us up because we&#8217;ve got a lot of deliveries &#8211; like oxygen bottles.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"2\" data-fid=\"6826\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/oxygen_tanks.jpg\" title=\"Heavy Oxygen tanks\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>The jewellers receive heavy deliveries needed for business<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Neil Greenwood, photography artist at Thomas Street Studios, also agrees that closure is not practical for business with large and heavy deliveries, which don&#8217;t always&nbsp;arrive during the loading windows of&nbsp;6am-10am and 6pm-7pm.<\/p>\n<p>However, he does see&nbsp;the street&nbsp;closure as a positive change which&nbsp;offers locals and visitors a safe space to socialise in without cars.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cGenerally I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a bad thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a lovely little vibe out here when the sun\u2019s out and people are out drinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scheme will also permanently close Ducie Street and implement changes to&nbsp;Dale Street and Tariff Street, including new cycle stands, reduced street parking, and a one-way road restriction to widen the footway on Tariff Street.<\/p>\n<p>Greater Manchester\u2019s cycling and walking commissioner, Chris Boardman, said: \u201cWhile the Bee Network is about active travel, the space to do that doesn\u2019t always have to be a segregated strip of tarmac, it can simply be a car-free or very low-car environment in which you can choose to stride, ride, roll, or linger.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Northern Quarter scheme will facilitate all these activities and much more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Work has already started after public consultation last winter&nbsp;and &#8211; depending on future public feedback&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;further work could be implemented&nbsp;on other locations such as Shudehill and Stevenson Square.<\/p>\n<p>Environment, planning and transport Councillor Angeliki Stogia, said: \u201cWe want to make it more dynamic, attractive, and greener for all, while supporting our local independent businesses too.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The city council has decided to permanently close Thomas Street as part of a new Northern Quarter cycling and walking scheme for&nbsp;summer 2021.
