{"id":5346,"date":"2021-02-18T18:26:48","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T18:26:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2021\/02\/18\/campaign-against-councils-plan-increase-police-presence-manchester-schools\/"},"modified":"2021-02-18T18:26:48","modified_gmt":"2021-02-18T18:26:48","slug":"campaign-against-councils-plan-increase-police-presence-manchester-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/campaign-against-councils-plan-increase-police-presence-manchester-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Campaign against council\u2019s plan to increase police presence in Manchester schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The \u2018No Police in Schools\u2019 campaign is fighting against plans to increase police presence in schools. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The campaign is backed by Manchester-based <a href=\"https:\/\/kidsofcolour.com\/\">Kids of Colour<\/a>, who educate young people on race, identity and culture and create a safe space allowing young people of colour to freely express themselves and talk about their experiences without the fear of being shut down or questioned.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation claim the presence of police in schools creates a climate of fear and hostility for already marginalised groups \u2013 this comes after the mayor of Manchester spoke about increasing police presence in schools.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-5343\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_165928_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"631\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_165928_0.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_165928_0-285x300.jpg 285w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_165928_0-974x1024.jpg 974w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_165928_0-768x807.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Project officer Mea&nbsp;Aitken &nbsp;said: \u201cIn Kids of Colour, we really try and adapt to the needs of the community, so this often means we have to be quite flexible with the work that we do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy work includes doing antiracist workshops, speaking on panels, writing articles, holding safe spaces for young people of colour and contributing to research, such as our joint report with the Northern Police Monitoring Project,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nopoliceinschools.co.uk\/resources\/Decriminalise%20the%20Classroom%20-%20A%20Community%20Response%20to%20Police%20in%20Greater%20Manchester%27s%20Schools.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/nopoliceinschools.co.uk\/resources\/Decriminalise%20the%20Classroom%20-%20A%20Community%20Response%20to%20Police%20in%20Greater%20Manchester%27s%20Schools.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Decriminalise the Classroom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the report, we know that police presence increases anxiety fear and discomfort for students which is far from the way to make students feel engaged and empowered to learn and develop themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving police in schools completely ignores the root of why a student may be struggling, these students should be given additional support, not made fearful due to a police presence\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">On our birthday we always think about the first chat with this wonderful young person (who has just written a great review of a bookshelf book! Groups of black students being labelled as a gang; overly aggressive and sexualised language being used towards female students of colour such as &#8216;slut&#8217; and harsh sanctions being given out to student of colour for their behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that this is creating a very toxic environment for students, especially student of colour and it feels important that we challenge the normalisation of this police presence in schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Aitken also believes that Manchester as a city is arguably over-policed already: \u201cThere are definitely areas in Manchester that are over-policed. In areas such as Moss Side and Gorton, there is a much higher police presence than in areas such as Didsbury and Chorlton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe areas that are over-policed are often majority working-class or people of colour and as we know from stop and search statistics it is people from these communities who are often overpoliced and unjustly stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was also found in the report that some respondents believed that a police presence would \u2018increase safety, deter violence, and improve police relations with over-policed communities\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-5344\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_170054.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_170054.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_170054-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_170054-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_170054-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_170054-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Others believed that the \u2018presence of police in schools creates a climate of fear, anxiety and hostility for young people, particularly for those that are already marginalised.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>When speaking about Covid-19\u2019s impact on young people, Aitken said: \u201cIf we look at the disruption to education that Covid has caused and think about the existing attainment gap, it is likely that we will see that covid will affect the performance of students of colour&#8217;s attainment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis could be because students of colour are less likely to have access to additional support such as private tutoring and also not have access to the same resources as other students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kids of Colour is entirely donation funded &#8211; they also apply for funding for organisations that have pots of money for similar projects.<\/p>\n<p>Currently they have a crowdfunding aim of \u00a33,000, and have currently raised \u00a339,023 with 1,397 donations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-5345\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_165943.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_165943.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_165943-300x270.jpg 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_165943-1024x921.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/02\/20210216_165943-768x690.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatermanchester-ca.gov.uk\/media\/3106\/gm_violence_reduction_plan_final_amends_final.pdf\">Serious Violence Action Plan <\/a>was drafted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatermanchester-ca.gov.uk\/\">Greater Manchester Combined Authority<\/a> to show the importance of having officers in certain schools.<\/p>\n<p>The plan is an online document containing seven steps the GMCA is looking to implement, including thecollaborating with schools and&nbsp;colleges to prevent violence.<\/p>\n<p>The report states: \u201cAny projects of activities will be done with the involvement of the voluntary and community sector, rather than assuming we know what communities need.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the last three years, the number of knife crime offences in schools 61 to 127, a rise of 108%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany senior leaders in schools and colleges have asked for dedicated police officers or community support officers to assist them in preventing knife crime and serious violence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The report adds that&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cschools are often the first to identify changes in a young person\u2019s behaviour or life circumstances and having a police officer on site would help those schools an appropriate package of support for that young individual\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This could include coaching, mentoring schemes or increased skill development support.
