Andy Burnham read out stories of sexual assault survivors while Mancunians lit more than 100 candles to remember murdered Sarah Everard last night.<\/p>\n

Sarah Everard, 33, from London disappeared on the way home from a friend last week. Her remains were found in woodlands around Kent. A Met Police officer has been charged with her murder.<\/p>\n

The case sparked a debate about gender violence, with women speaking up on social media about their fears and traumatic experiences of walking outside at night.<\/p>\n

Men joined the conversation by asking for advice on how to make women feel safer.<\/p>\n

The mayor of Manchester spoke alongside Melissa Johns, Gina Martin and other supporters of the women\u2019s safety movement Reclaim These Streets<\/a> at a virtual event hosted by Aurelia magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He read out the experience of a woman who got her breast grabbed underneath her shirt by a group of drunk men when she tried to stop them from assaulting a homeless man.<\/p>\n

Andy Burnham said: \u201cThe conversation must start with recognising that the people who must change are men.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that he saw it as his responsibility to start that conversation.<\/p>\n

\"Candle
“My candle is out. At age 11 was the first time I experienced sexual harassment and it has continued to this day (age 16). Something needs to change.” Statement and image by Maisie Dodd.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Activist and author Gina Martin, best known for her successful campaign to make upskirting<\/a> illegal in the UK, spoke at the event as well.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cA lot of us are angry, a lot of us are exasperated.\u201d<\/p>\n

About the online debate she said: \u201cThe way we are having this conversation needs to change.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of offering [men] individual solutions like \u2018I\u2019ll cross the road to make you feel safer\u2019 we need a in-depth conversation about masculinity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Candle
“I live in hope that one day the streets will be safe for women, regardless of the clothes we wear, the time of day we walk, where we live. I hope that for our daughters and granddaughters, it\u2019s not their natural instinct to walk with keys clenched between fingers in order to feel safe.” Statement and image by Rachel Fenner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

After a minute’s silence for Sarah Everard, speakers addressed the broad spectrum of female experiences of verbal and physical violence.<\/p>\n

Coronation Street actor Melissa Johns, who was born without a right forearm and hand, said about women with disabilities: \u201cWe are told our bodies are disgusting and we don\u2019t deserve romantic relationships.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs disabled women our bodies still aren\u2019t our own.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other contributors emphasized the lived realities of trans women, women of colour, and women with hijabs.<\/p>\n

“We will never reclaim the streets for half of the population until men stand up as allies and demand behaviour change from perpetrators.” Statement and image by Sarah Miguel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Several speakers mentioned the factor of blame. One woman described how she was walking home with a friend when they passed a group of drunk men. One of them moved behind her and put his hands up her skirt.<\/p>\n

When her friend berated him for it, she said this just fuelled the men\u2019s laughter. The woman asked the perpetrator why he had done that; and he said: \u201cYou were asking for it dressed like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah Miguel, who works at the People’s History Museum in Manchester, said: “We have been conditioned into taking decisions around safety which shape our entire lives.<\/p>\n

“The onus has wrongly been put on women to keep ourselves safe, to change our behaviour.<\/p>\n

“I don’t want to detract from the tragic loss of Sarah’s life. I can’t however ignore that the media would not portray Sarah’s case in the same way had she been a black woman or POC, a trans woman or a sex worker.”<\/p>\n

\"Candle
\u201cI\u2019ve lit my candle in solidarity with all the brave and strong women fighting against violence, misogyny and oppression worldwide, particularly for those who have lost their lives in the UK and my home country Myanmar. Gendered violence and sexual abuse is used against women by those who are meant to protect them every single day, and it must stop now.\u201d Statement and image by Mee-Mee Soe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Chris, the second male speaker at the event, said he took issue with the victims often being at the centre of stories about abuse.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cIf the story becomes all about the victim, the perpetrator is no longer part of the narrative [\u2026].<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we don\u2019t start framing men at the center of this, it never changes.\u201d
\n\tChris called for more \u2018uncomfortable conversations\u2019 between fathers and sons and among men in general.<\/p>\n

Originally, the vigil was planned as a live event on St Peter\u2019s Square in Manchester.<\/p>\n

Metropolitan Police originally agreed, but withdrew its support later stating it would be a violation of restrictions surrounding Covid-19.<\/p>\n

The High Court ruled that this decision was justified and not against human rights law.<\/p>\n

While a vigil in Clapham Common resulted in arrests and violent clashes between London\u2019s Metropolitan Police force and mourners, the situation in Manchester remained peaceful.<\/p>\n

People followed the organisers\u2019 advice to stay at home and light candles on their doorsteps.<\/p>\n

The event in Manchester was organised by Right To Walk MCR<\/a> in support of the Reclaim These Streets movement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
