{"id":5534,"date":"2021-05-21T11:04:30","date_gmt":"2021-05-21T10:04:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2021\/05\/21\/public-campaign-arts-are-leading-charge-against-proposed-50-funding-cut-art-based-subjects\/"},"modified":"2021-05-21T11:04:30","modified_gmt":"2021-05-21T10:04:30","slug":"public-campaign-arts-are-leading-charge-against-proposed-50-funding-cut-art-based-subjects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/public-campaign-arts-are-leading-charge-against-proposed-50-funding-cut-art-based-subjects\/","title":{"rendered":"The Public Campaign for the Arts are leading the charge against proposed\u00a050% funding cut to art-based subjects in higher education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.campaignforthearts.org\">Public Campaign for the Arts<\/a>&nbsp;are&nbsp;condemning&nbsp;the government\u2019s plan to cut 50% of funding for the arts in higher education.<\/p>\n<p>The government&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.officeforstudents.org.uk\/publications\/consultation-on-recurrent-funding-for-2021-22\/\">plan<\/a>s&nbsp;to create a new separate category called \u2018C1.2 subjects\u2019 \u2013 for music, dance, drama and performing arts,&nbsp;art and design,&nbsp;media studies,&nbsp;and archaeology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Subjects in this new category will then have their \u2018high-cost subject funding\u2019 halved.<\/p>\n<p>This means that \u00a319m instead of \u00a336m will be given to support arts and creative courses in England for 2021-22, a reduction of \u00a317m.<\/p>\n<p>Education Secretary Gavin Williamson issued guidance to the Office for Students (OfS)&nbsp;which distributes funding to higher education providers in England.<\/p>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Public Campaign for the Arts&nbsp;aims to increase participation, investment and diversity within the arts. Rather than segregating and devaluing the arts in this way, the government should maintain its important investment in creative skills, ensuring that arts courses are widely accessible and properly supported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The campaign launched in June 2020 and nhas over 200,000 registered supporters, pointing to increased public concern for the future of UK arts and culture.<\/p>\n<p>It successfully petitioned the Government to introduce the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artscouncil.org.uk\/funding\/culture-recovery-fund-grants#section-1\">Culture Recovery Fund<\/a>&nbsp;to help protect cultural organisations from the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>In a press release, the stated: \u201cBefore the pandemic, the creative industries were growing five times faster than the UK economy as a whole and generating over \u00a3111 billion a year. We risk losing these benefits without proper support for the creative skills underpinning them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;OfS, in response to the criticism of the government on social media, said: \u201cThe proposed reduction relates to a much smaller subsidy that is currently provided by the OfS, designed to help universities and colleges deliver subjects that are expensive to teach. For arts subjects, this subsidy currently works out at around \u00a3243 per full-time student per year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(This) is paid to universities and colleges, not given directly to students. Under the proposals, this subsidy would be reduced by 50 percent to \u00a3121.50 per student per year \u2013 equivalent to a reduction of around 1 percent of the combined tuition fee and OfS funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They would&nbsp;increase funding between \u00a342m to \u00a353m , benefiting a range of arts institutions in England including drama schools, conservatories, art schools and music colleges.<\/p>\n<p>Manchester is home to several art-based HE institutons,&nbsp;including the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.art.mmu.ac.uk\">Manchester\u2019s School of Art<\/a>, t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bimm.ac.uk\/?gclid=CjwKCAjwqIiFBhAHEiwANg9szjIfLEJaUBJvBeF5d80JrD1oooppZfL51VWUfjAs8sSZxf-9NzCj4xoC0vQQAvD_BwE\">he BIMM Institute<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rncm.ac.uk\">RNCM.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>OFS added: &#8220;Our funding budget will have to stretch further in the coming years with significant growth forecast in student numbers \u2013 particularly in courses that are more expensive to teach (we have already seen significant increases in applications to nursing and medicine courses this year).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is&nbsp;fear from the campaigners that: \u201c(the decision)&nbsp;will affect all students, but particularly those from less privileged backgrounds who may rely on being able to access courses locally or through institutions that cannot divert funds from elsewhere to save their music and arts programmes at short notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently&nbsp;there are&nbsp;160,927&nbsp;signatures&nbsp;for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.campaignforthearts.org\/petitions\/stop-the-50-percent-funding-cut-to-arts-subjects-in-higher-education\/\">petition<\/a>&nbsp;and donations can be made on their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.campaignforthearts.org\/donate\/\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The&nbsp;Public Campaign for the Arts&nbsp;are&nbsp;condemning&nbsp;the government\u2019s plan to cut 50% of funding for the arts in higher education.
