{"id":5557,"date":"2021-06-06T16:59:40","date_gmt":"2021-06-06T15:59:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2021\/06\/06\/campaigners-visit-local-secondary-school-encouraging-open-talks-about-race-issues\/"},"modified":"2021-06-06T16:59:40","modified_gmt":"2021-06-06T15:59:40","slug":"campaigners-visit-local-secondary-school-encouraging-open-talks-about-race-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/campaigners-visit-local-secondary-school-encouraging-open-talks-about-race-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Campaigners visit local secondary school encouraging open talks about race issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OqFT-m-n8E8\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Representatives of the <a href=\"https:\/\/kidsofcolour.com\/\">Kids of Colour<\/a> campaign visited&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/cedarmount.manchester.sch.uk\">Cedar Mount Academy<\/a>&nbsp;in Gorton&nbsp;to a&nbsp;hold face-to face workshops exploring idenities and challenging sterotypical and prejudice views.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KidsOfColourHQ\/posts\/958182028262925\">Described as a day of solidarity<\/a>&#8220;, the students are shown&nbsp;PowerPoints and relevant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCcCZOh8AusathhNJUjIXHNQ\">YouTube videos<\/a> &nbsp;in these in-person day long workshops, as well as creating an open space for &nbsp;these students to have discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Laura Morris, a teacher from Cedar Mount Academy, talked to NQ about the scheme and the work the school does to combat prejudicial&nbsp;narratives and harmful stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cWhen lockdown started last March, I signed our school up for fortnightly lectures with The Black Curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The students loved these and got a lot out of taking part, but I realised that as much as they enjoyed learning about things they hadn\u2019t before, they also really valued the conversations that followed the session (particularly after the death of George Floyd).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/theblackcurriculum.com\">Black Curriculum<\/a> is a social enterprise founded in 2019 with the aim of providing black history programmes, campaigning and teacher training.<\/p>\n<p>Laura said: \u201cHaving spoken to Roxy Legane (the founder), she offered us the opportunity to have weekly sessions on Zoom with our students.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These continued during the summer holidays through to present day. Now we\u2019ve been able to have a few in-person meetings too which have been great.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The aim, from the school\u2019s perspective, was to give students a space to have important conversations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The students love the sessions and look forward to them every week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I attend each week and it gives me a greater understanding of the common issues the students deal with at school so I can do something about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A variety of themes and topics are discussed in these workshops such as race and racism. However, current events in the world also shape what is discussed. Meghan Markle\u2019s interview with Oprah or the Indian famers\u2019 protest have featured in the workshops, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Students are also encouraged to speak about their own personal experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Asking if these workshops should be made mandatory to all secondary schools, Laura stressed their importance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said: &#8220;Certainly. If there was someone appropriately skilled in school to lead on conversations about race, that would be great, but often that won\u2019t be the case (and could lead to an increased workload, usually for teachers of colour).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having an external agency, like Kids of Colour, lead on the discussion allows&nbsp;students to feel they can express themselves fully without fear of consequences if they say something negative about how they were treated in school.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Laura went on to stress the need for the school curriculum to be updated to reflect a more ethnically diverse Great Britain, especially in humanity subjects such as English Literature and History.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cI think the curriculum, in all subjects, should reflect the students it is being delivered to. While making changes in English and History would be a start, that\u2019s only the tip of the iceberg.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We had a productive CPD this evening, led by the Anti-Racism Working Group. Following the one year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, we reflected together, exploring the blurred feelings of disappointment and hope.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTo the Yr 11s who had their last day, thanks for a brilliant year, you\u2019ve all been magical. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ss3I6N0Z1x\">pic.twitter.com\/ss3I6N0Z1x<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 Kids Of Colour (@KidsOfColourHQ) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KidsOfColourHQ\/status\/1397965755082330113?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 27, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Mea Atiken, a project officer&nbsp;from \u2018Kids of colour\u2019, said:&nbsp;\u201cWe think it is really important for young people to have a space to talk about race and racism because so often in institutions young people are silenced and encouraged against being political, they are often gaslit when they talk about their experiences too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having a space to talk about world issues is so important because seeing and experiencing racism and marginalisation can be really traumatic, holding that trauma within yourself without having a space to speak about it can be extremely damaging to people\u2019s mental wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Holding regular sessions, workshops and events that open up this space is one of the ways we can help prevent young people of colour from being overwhelmed and whilst we know that these spaces are not the only way to support young people, we see first hand how much they can help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Kids of Colour\u2019,&nbsp;currently run&nbsp;weekly sessions with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theeastmanchesteracademy.co.uk\">The East Manchester Academy<\/a>, and are exploring with two other schools how they can support similar groups for them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We\u2019ve enjoyed a fantastic all-day workshop with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KidsOfColourHQ?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@KidsOfColourHQ<\/a>.
