{"id":5729,"date":"2021-10-15T11:27:19","date_gmt":"2021-10-15T10:27:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2021\/10\/15\/i-wanted-write-characters-were-good-men-trini-authors-monique-roffey-and-ingrid-persaud\/"},"modified":"2021-10-15T11:27:19","modified_gmt":"2021-10-15T10:27:19","slug":"i-wanted-write-characters-were-good-men-trini-authors-monique-roffey-and-ingrid-persaud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/i-wanted-write-characters-were-good-men-trini-authors-monique-roffey-and-ingrid-persaud\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;I wanted to write characters that were good men&#8217;: Trini authors Monique Roffey and Ingrid Persaud on feminism and masculinity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchesterliteraturefestival.co.uk\/events\/monique-roffey-ingrid-persaud-39598\">Manchester Literature Festival<\/a> hosted Manchester Metropolitan University Lecturer Monique Roffey and author Ingrid Persaud at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitmanchester.com\/things-to-see-and-do\/central-library-p1551\">Central Library<\/a> on St. Peter&#8217;s Square.<\/p>\n<p>Roffey\u2019s novel <em>The Mermaid of Black Conch&nbsp;<\/em>was this year&#8217;s winner of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/moniqueroffey.com\">Costa Bo<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/moniqueroffey.com\/\">ok Prize.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The senior lecturer in creative writing at MMU is&nbsp;also the author of seven books, including&nbsp;<em>The White Woman on the Green Bicycle<\/em>, which was shortlisted for The Women\u2019s Prize for Fiction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Persaud won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.costa.co.uk\/behind-the-beans\/costa-book-awards\/book-awards\">previous year\u2019s <\/a>award with <em>\u2018Love after Love\u2019<\/em>, her debut novel, and won the 2017 BBC National Short Story award with &#8216;<em>The Sweet Sop&#8217;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Ingrid looks like she\u2019s hugging yogi bear. Thank you <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/McrLitFest?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@McrLitFest<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IngridPersaud?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@IngridPersaud<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/happy?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#happy<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/trinidadandtobago?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#trinidadandtobago<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/fiction?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#fiction<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WritingCommunity?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WritingCommunity<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/38qTLDfWyf\">pic.twitter.com\/38qTLDfWyf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 Monique Roffey (@moniqueroffey) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/moniqueroffey\/status\/1447243036589805568?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 10, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Love after Love\u2019<\/em> is told from multiple perspectives but was inspired originally from a single scene about Solo, one of the main characters going to a whorehouse, and how this led to questions of masculinity &#8211; a main theme in the novel.<\/p>\n<p>Roffey was inspired by an old Cuban myth, believing that it needed a female perspective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said, however, for her male characters David and Life:&nbsp;&#8220;I wanted to write characters who were good men:&nbsp;lovers of women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Persaud admits in <em>&#8216;Love after Love&#8217;<\/em> that she \u201caimed for an openness with men\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4HzK7aeNxPE\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Both Monique Roffey and Ingrid Persaud are Trinidadian, sharing&nbsp;a proud sense of belonging to the island in the Q&amp;A as they spoke of the food, language and culture.<\/p>\n<p>Both award winning books are set in the Caribbean, and explore subjects such as homophobia, racism, post-colonialism and masculinity.<\/p>\n<p>They also speak about&nbsp;looking through the female gaze, magical writing, and family.<\/p>\n<p>The importance of place is a theme that is constantly brought up in the conversation, with Roffey herself even stating that her last book was \u201cborn in Trinidad and Tobago&#8221;, and that the use of Trinidadian dialect is \u201ca language I speak in my head and when I\u2019m home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Expanding&nbsp;on the importance of using Trinidadian dialect, Persaud said: \u201cI made a conscious decision to write in Trinidadian English &#8211; not just the dialogue but the prose as well.<\/p>\n<p>This is our English and it\u2019s a beautiful English which everyone understands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Persaud is currently writing a new novel set in the Caribbean about a notorious gangster seen through the eyes of the women of his life.<\/p>\n<p>The event was hosted by Kate Feld,&nbsp;a journalism lecturer at the University of Salford and editor of UK creative nonfiction journal and reading series <em>&#8216;The Real Story&#8217;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Her creative work has also been published in journals and anthologies such as <em>The Stinging Fly,&nbsp;The Letters Page, Hotel,&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>Entrop<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Ingrid tells us that part of her process for writing the book was watching cooking videos on YouTube to access the culture of Trinidad. \u2018There was a lot of eating.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 Manchester Lit Fest (@McrLitFest) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/McrLitFest\/status\/1447189925271642114?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 10, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Now in its 16th year, Manchester Literature Festival has been building on its previous success, expanding audiences and creating new partnerships across the national and international literary world.<\/p>\n<p>The festival has quadrupled in size from 2006 when it featured 30 events,&nbsp;attracting an audience of 3,000, to the 2019 Festival which featured 75 events and attracted an audience of over 12,000.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020 MLF delivered its first digital festival featuring 17 online events broadcast on Crowdcast over a long weekend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Manchester Literature Festival hosted Manchester Metropolitan University Lecturer Monique Roffey and author Ingrid Persaud at the Central Library on St. Peter&#8217;s Square.
