{"id":5763,"date":"2021-10-20T15:46:41","date_gmt":"2021-10-20T14:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2021\/10\/20\/cabaret-freedom-event-held-manchester-literature-festival-features-tolu-agbelusi-yomi-sode-and\/"},"modified":"2021-10-20T15:46:41","modified_gmt":"2021-10-20T14:46:41","slug":"cabaret-freedom-event-held-manchester-literature-festival-features-tolu-agbelusi-yomi-sode-and","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/cabaret-freedom-event-held-manchester-literature-festival-features-tolu-agbelusi-yomi-sode-and\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Cabaret for Freedom&#8217; event held by Manchester Literature Festival features Tolu Agbelusi, Yomi Sode and Young Identity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2ItyfpDaeFI\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On Saturday night,&nbsp;St John&#8217;s Church hosted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchesterliteraturefestival.co.uk\/events\/cabaret-for-freedom-with-tolu-agbelusi-yomi-sode-young-identity-39610\">Cabaret for Freedom<\/a> event with British-Nigerian poets Yomi Sode, Tolu Agbelusi and Manchester-based writing collective&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youngidentity.org\">Young Identity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The night kicked off with host and founder of Young Identity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatermancunians.blog\/shirley-may-manchester-poet\">Shirley May<\/a> reciting poem&nbsp;\u2018Queen reigns in a city of bees\u2019, which celebrates Caribbean culture and being born Black-British.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the poems, May&nbsp;said: \u201cI saw the city growing and changing, I saw the ugly bits and the beautiful parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other poets from Young Identity then performed, exploring a variety of topics and themes with their authentic voices ranging from mental health, natural disasters, identity and blackness&nbsp;among the many.<\/p>\n<p>The poets were mainly young adults, however the youngest performer was a primary school boy from Stretford.<\/p>\n<p>They performed poetry and music on the theme: \u2018Such a time as this\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Young Identity are a charity that began as a&nbsp;voluntary youth-arts performance project.<\/p>\n<p>It was founded by May along with Ali Gadema in 2006, and is partnered with Home, Manchester&#8217;s centre for contemporary theatre, film, art, music and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A published poet, May has appeared in numerous anthologies and is a part of Speakeasy Collective, with her first poetry collection&nbsp;titled<em> &#8216;She Wrote Her Own Eulogy&#8217;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>She has appeared at venues such as the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CalabashJamaica\">Calabash International Literary Festival<\/a> in Jamaica.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;A ten-minute interval occurred at the event, during which up-and-coming vocal artist <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/shola-loveen\">Shola Mcleod<\/a> performed before more poets from Young Identity took to the stage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Uffff <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YomiSode?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@YomiSode<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ToluAgbelusi?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ToluAgbelusi<\/a> smashed it this evening, alongside incredible talents from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YOUNGIDmcr?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@YOUNGIDmcr<\/a>. Awesome night <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/McrLitFest?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@McrLitFest<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/i19z8e7AMF\">pic.twitter.com\/i19z8e7AMF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 Ayesha (@mirror_write) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mirror_write\/status\/1449478899444899840?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 16, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/toluagbelusi.com\/site\/\">Tolu Agelusi<\/a>, a human rights lawyer and the founder of Home Sessions, a poetry development programme for young black poets, recited from her collection <em>&#8216;Locating Strongwoman&#8217;<\/em>, or <em>Jacaranda<\/em>, which explores the unperformed self, womanhood, and the art of living.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Yomi Sode, Tolu Agelusi\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"7353\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"323\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/10\/fb1o1odwuakkscv.jpeg\" width=\"431\"><figcaption>Tolu Agelusi and Yomi Sode at the MLF<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yomi Sode, another performer and an&nbsp;international poet, ended the night by reciting three poems.<\/p>\n<p>Sode&nbsp;won the Jerwood&nbsp;Compton Poetry Fellowship in 2019 and has also&nbsp;contributed by writing an essay in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterstones.com\/book\/safe\/derek-owusu\/9781409182641\">SAFE: On Black British Men Reclaiming Space<\/a>, which was published in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>His first poetry collection <a href=\"https:\/\/yomisode.com\/projects\/manorism\/\">Manorism<\/a> is coming out in 2022 and will be published by Penguin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The full list of the \u2018Young Identity\u2019 poets are listed below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nasima Begum, known as Nasima Bee<\/li>\n<li>P.
