{"id":5821,"date":"2021-10-26T23:17:25","date_gmt":"2021-10-26T22:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2021\/10\/26\/refugee-children-and-friends-explore-what-it-means-be-citizen-manchester\/"},"modified":"2021-10-26T23:17:25","modified_gmt":"2021-10-26T22:17:25","slug":"refugee-children-and-friends-explore-what-it-means-be-citizen-manchester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/refugee-children-and-friends-explore-what-it-means-be-citizen-manchester\/","title":{"rendered":"Refugee children and friends explore what it means to be a citizen of Manchester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p aria-level=\"1\" lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{f25ad653-717e-4c6a-9b3a-b59307c86e05}{131}\" paraid=\"1817912095\" role=\"heading\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">An&nbsp;arts project supporting refugees and&nbsp;families seeking asylum culminated in a performance exploring what it means to be a citizen of Manchester.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"1\" lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{f25ad653-717e-4c6a-9b3a-b59307c86e05}{131}\" paraid=\"1817912095\" role=\"heading\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">The play was written and performed by foreign born and&nbsp;second generation&nbsp;migrant children aged between seven and 16.<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"1\" lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{f25ad653-717e-4c6a-9b3a-b59307c86e05}{131}\" paraid=\"1817912095\" role=\"heading\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">A project by charity&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrocats.org.uk\/\">Afrocats<\/a>, the performance was inspired by both British and overseas cultures including those of Nigeria, Ghana and Syria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"1\" lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{f25ad653-717e-4c6a-9b3a-b59307c86e05}{131}\" paraid=\"1817912095\" role=\"heading\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Afrocats&nbsp;is a&nbsp;female-led charity that supports people in Manchester who face exclusion because of their immigration status, class, age, cultural inexperience and education. The charity empowers 43 young people, 80 adults and is supported by 27 volunteers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"1\" lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{36f81af4-fe6d-4333-9e66-220c68484e4b}{208}\" paraid=\"1227377329\" role=\"heading\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Titled&nbsp;<em>Umbrellas in the Sun<\/em>, the performance began with the sound of rain and splashing in puddles recorded by the participants in Piccadilly Gardens weeks before.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{0642d137-de6d-4af6-a40c-70ccedc60577}{72}\" paraid=\"2030791940\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Manchester anthem Wonderwall by Oasis featured in the performance alongside originally choreographed TikTok&nbsp;dances and discussions about an array of cultural cuisines such as yam,&nbsp;shitoo&nbsp;and&nbsp;jollof&nbsp;rice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"7496\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"495\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/10\/afrocats1_0.jpeg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Image: Shirlaine Forrest<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{3ec15951-0f99-45eb-94bb-071c13e9a354}{50}\" paraid=\"51199733\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">The closing section of the performance was an original song inspired by Black Lives Matter which repeated the refrain&nbsp;\u201cWe are a family fighting for equality\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{c1b6d8da-faaf-4ce1-a518-33686b6309fb}{95}\" paraid=\"1510507572\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Assistant director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrocats.org.uk\/post\/umbrellas-in-the-sun-kids-and-their-imaginations\">Jemima&nbsp;Sofini&nbsp;said<\/a>: \u201cThey\u2019ve been seeing racism and experiencing it too, so through the song they\u2019ve created they have been able to express their feelings in their own words.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{6c7d2ba0-137e-4b2f-aa0b-a350d8d0e860}{136}\" paraid=\"401712045\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/hate-crime-england-and-wales-2020-to-2021\/hate-crime-england-and-wales-2020-to-2021\">Reported hate crimes<\/a> have doubled over the last five years and more than 70% of hate crimes reported in 2020 were motivated by race.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{b932c5e5-5d6d-449e-a418-03951e4a889b}{28}\" paraid=\"1956887949\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">When the performance ended,&nbsp;Afrocats&nbsp;founder Magdalene Bartlett praised&nbsp;the performers as the \u201cfuture leaders\u201d of our community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{923a173c-4f24-4259-8964-daa7f9b24b4b}{134}\" paraid=\"341241250\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">After the performance the children played together in the dining room where one of the parents cooked a meal for everyone.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{923a173c-4f24-4259-8964-daa7f9b24b4b}{134}\" paraid=\"341241250\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Magdalene said: \u201cIt makes it all worth it to give them that temporary relief that all children need.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{923a173c-4f24-4259-8964-daa7f9b24b4b}{137}\" paraid=\"651179280\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">During the pandemic,&nbsp;Afrocats&nbsp;extended their&nbsp;impact beyond the arts and responded to the needs of the people they support.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{923a173c-4f24-4259-8964-daa7f9b24b4b}{187}\" paraid=\"1543922973\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Magdalene said: \u201cWe provided culturally appropriate food parcels and laptops, things parents can\u2019t afford because they\u2019re living on the breadline, sometimes below the breadline.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Afrocats provided 30 families with culturally appropriate food parcels for three months\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"7437\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"450\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/10\/ersqphdxuaepftq.jpeg\" title=\"Afrocats provided 30 families with culturally appropriate food parcels for three moths\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Afrocats provided 30 families with culturally appropriate food parcels for three months Image: Afrocats<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{94128fd7-7977-4f9f-8d02-aa8cdd30cb96}{208}\" paraid=\"1500559831\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Afrocats&nbsp;say one in 10&nbsp;families they support are living in abject poverty and 92%&nbsp;are threatened with deportation or destitution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{53728bf0-fa01-4889-9dcc-b472c9999cd7}{201}\" paraid=\"1815640376\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">One participant of Umbrellas in the Sun and her mother are being threatened with deportation. Afrocats&nbsp;are raising&nbsp;funds for a lawyer for the family.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{b3ad94f7-e5a6-47a2-94ef-44c25b83bfd9}{136}\" paraid=\"1612000244\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard being a child in modern day Britain\u201d Magdalene said.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{b3ad94f7-e5a6-47a2-94ef-44c25b83bfd9}{136}\" paraid=\"1612000244\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cBut added on to that they\u2019ve got those other layers to worry about.
