Councillors on Greater Manchester Combined Authority\u2019s (GMCA) transport committee heard that funding will be provided for broken road safety cameras to be repaired.<\/p>\n

Laying out the meeting\u2019s road safety update<\/a>, TfGM\u2019s Head of Highways Peter Boulton said: \u201cThere was a reduction in traffic in 2020, but because traffic was more free-flowing there was an increase in speeding.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cThe Department for Transport are currently reviewing the document they received to request the need for new safety cameras [for Greater Manchester].\u201d<\/p>\n

Councillor Howard Sykes said it was important to repair cameras currently out-of-order across the region before looking at installing new ones.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s that thing I\u2019ve spoken about probably 18 months ago now,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got a number of speed cameras, not interested in new ones, but the ones that are currently in place that are actually non-functional.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are certainly two if not three I know of in my patch which have not worked for many months, if not years.<\/p>\n

“People are now familiar with that and now ignore the reason they were placed there which is to save lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cHave we yet got a programme where we are going to digitalise our existing speed cameras before we start looking at having some new ones?<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen are we going to do it and if not, why not?\u201d<\/p>\n

In answer, Mr Boulton stated: \u201cGood news, we have funding for digitalising the road safety cameras.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have secured funding and are currently going through the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are looking at the process of procurement and the intention is that we will start procurement this autumn.\u201d  <\/p>\n

Asked how he felt upon hearing this news, Councillor Sykes told the Northern Quota after the meeting: \u201cI thought I was going to get another fob-off answer, because that\u2019s what I\u2019ve had for years.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they said \u2018I\u2019m pleased to tell you we\u2019ve got some funding for it and we\u2019re about to procure it\u2019, I got a bit giddy.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow we\u2019ve actually got the money, we need to get on with it quickly so I shall continue to ask questions about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Councillor Sykes said the issue had been raised at a number of meetings over the years but he had “got nowhere”.<\/p>\n

He told NQ: \u201cTwo or three years ago, they had no budget to do it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just kept bringing it up because there are really good reasons why we put road safety cameras in, whether it\u2019s people in cars or pedestrians at risk.\u201d <\/p>\n

Councillor Sykes thought the pressure he put on the council, which he described as him \u2018being extremely vocal\u2019, was what moved the issue to the top of the agenda. <\/p>\n
