{"id":5893,"date":"2021-10-30T13:42:28","date_gmt":"2021-10-30T12:42:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2021\/10\/30\/home-celebrate-black-history-month-2021-while-pushing-narrative\/"},"modified":"2021-10-30T13:42:28","modified_gmt":"2021-10-30T12:42:28","slug":"home-celebrate-black-history-month-2021-while-pushing-narrative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/home-celebrate-black-history-month-2021-while-pushing-narrative\/","title":{"rendered":"Home celebrate Black History Month 2021 while pushing the narrative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/homemcr.org\">Home<\/a>&nbsp; put on numerous events to celebrate Black History Month this year.<\/p>\n<p>Events included live and online theatre, a specially curated film programme and a new exhibition in the Inspire Gallery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The specially curated film season&nbsp; included classics such as The Story of a Three Day Pass, Barbershop, No Place Like Home, Waiting to Exhale, The Story of Lovers Rock, Hollywood Shuffle and Amazing Grace.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sekeenat Karim is an assistant producer at Home who organised.<\/p>\n<p>Her role involves supporting the delivery of events, the production and co-production of programmes and theatre shows.<\/p>\n<p>Sekeenat Karim mentions said she decided on what type of films to curate after watching Love and Resilience,&nbsp;which has been described by Karim as a \u201cnon-traumatic black experience on screen\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This film was show by Home at the beginning of Black History Month.<\/p>\n<p>Sekeenat said: \u201cI went to the film department and said I really want to explore films that sit inside that genre.&nbsp;Meaning films that are non-traumatic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And by non-traumatic I mean films that don\u2019t directly explore slavery, police brutality all those kinds of traumatic things.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those experiences are very important and they always come up in history but there\u2019s also the other side to it. The joy, the lightness of the black narrative that isn\u2019t always highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think that there are many stereotypes around black narratives and black households which are not always true but are prominent in TV and film culture or in society.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel like it is really important to show the experiences where it is a real household.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s not always happy, there\u2019s ups and downs.
