nearly got run over!\u2019 Salford Quays campaigner succeeds in getting pedestrian walkways around busy roadworks site"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A resident has successfully campaigned for the introduction of pedestrian walkways after&nbsp;roadworks blocked use of pavements&nbsp;in Salford Quays.<\/p>\n<p>The works, which&nbsp;have been ongoing for almost a year after Salford council set aside \u00a31.35m for the project, aim&nbsp;to reduce traffic congestion and provide better facilities for cyclists and pedestrians.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Work has also been taking place on the Metrolink line, with partial closure of the Eccles line causing an influx of traffic jams around the area.<\/p>\n<p>With work undergoing on the pavement, residents were left with little choice but to walk alongside traffic without proper safety barriers and signage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"7516\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/10\/fullsizeoutput_16e5.jpeg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>The previous walkways which lacked signposting and led onto a busy road&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Alex Warren, who stood for election last year on a mandate to make the area safer and cleaner for residents, approached the roadworks team and asked for safer measures after a personal experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah&nbsp;I nearly got run over!\u201d he told Northern Quota.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe walkway next to the roadworks kind of just turned into the road and after my experience I saw a mum with two kids and a pram trying to walk down this road with cars driving right past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no provision and no safe walkway and I thought it just wasn\u2019t good enough, so I got in touch with the company that manages the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spoke to various people, got passed from pillar to post, spoke to the operations manager and eventually spoke to the public relations person who met me on the site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe met on the road and I showed her and took pictures saying what the problem was and asking to get it fixed and after a good two to three weeks I think, we got it sorted.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"7419\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"450\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2021\/10\/dea86054-7b3b-4f0e-ae13-50c4d59ac60c.jpg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Quays volunteer Alex Warren next to the safe walkways he helped to install<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Residents have welcomed the safer walkways, with one commenting: \u201cThe signs you can see in advance work much better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They told NQ: \u201cBefore it was awful as you couldn\u2019t see where you were supposed to walk, whoever was in charge of signposting hadn\u2019t implemented it properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another said: \u201cIt was terrible trying to walk down there before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was like dicing with death to get from one end to the other, so this new walkway has made a big difference to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alex&#8217;s next goal as the Quays campaigner is&nbsp;to get proper disabled access installed around the walkways, as this continues to be an issue for people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandad came to the United game a couple of weeks back and he\u2019s in a wheelchair, so we had to carry him about 100 metres because we couldn\u2019t get him around that area\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s something else I\u2019ve been pulling them up on as it\u2019s not inclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roadworks management team&nbsp;John Sisk and Son&nbsp;told the Northern Quota: &#8220;We worked with Alex to try and help improve the area, which Sisk try to do on all our projects.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We did a site walk with Alex and talked him through the project and discussed how we could help him help the community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Transport for Greater Manchester have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tfgm.com\/major-works-and-events\/highways\/trafford-road\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;that 24-hour lane closures have commenced on Trafford Road and that work will be taking place at the junction of Trafford Road and Salford Quays until mid-November.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A resident has successfully campaigned for the introduction of pedestrian
