{"id":5934,"date":"2021-11-02T14:47:17","date_gmt":"2021-11-02T14:47:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2021\/11\/02\/levenshulme-station-get-disabled-access-more-must-be-done-say-campaigners\/"},"modified":"2021-11-02T14:47:17","modified_gmt":"2021-11-02T14:47:17","slug":"levenshulme-station-get-disabled-access-more-must-be-done-say-campaigners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/levenshulme-station-get-disabled-access-more-must-be-done-say-campaigners\/","title":{"rendered":"Levenshulme\u00a0station to get disabled access but more must be done say campaigners\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p paraeid=\"{08e7a6bc-392b-4ad7-b35d-24b5ed165e44}{56}\" paraid=\"1300815485\">Levenshulme train station is to be given step-free access after years of campaigning by residents who say society must do more for passengers with disabilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{08e7a6bc-392b-4ad7-b35d-24b5ed165e44}{72}\" paraid=\"1716496841\">The station has the highest number of passengers of rail stations with stepped access within Greater Manchester, excluding Manchester Oxford Road, and is one of the main feeder stations to Manchester Piccadilly.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{08e7a6bc-392b-4ad7-b35d-24b5ed165e44}{80}\" paraid=\"1212152072\">Pauline Johnston, from Friends of&nbsp;Levenshulme&nbsp;Station, said her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/173358016044101\/permalink\/4565312503515275\/\">&#8220;heart is aglow&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;after&nbsp;years of letters, surveys, petitions and campaigns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{08e7a6bc-392b-4ad7-b35d-24b5ed165e44}{94}\" paraid=\"1759025417\">Last year&nbsp;Levenshulme station was refurbished&nbsp;with new lights and flood&nbsp;mitigation&nbsp;but&nbsp;residents accused rail bosses of neglecting the need for disabled access.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{38a0e3a6-2b97-4d90-8e7f-8b38303274ba}{127}\" paraid=\"1934694363\">Afzal Khan, MP for Manchester Gorton, said he was &#8220;delighted&#8221; with the news, adding: \u201cIt is unacceptable that in the 21st century less than 60% of Greater Manchester\u2019s train stations have step free access.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This is fantastic news and long overdue, huge congratulations to all who campaigned for these changes!<\/p>\n<p>\t\tHowever, more action is needed to make the streets in Levenshulme safe to travel once you leave the station, eg. street clutter and pavement parking on the A6 and Albert road. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MD0dSSammM\">https:\/\/t.co\/MD0dSSammM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 Streets for People &#8211; Levenshulme and Burnage (@s4plb) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/s4plb\/status\/1453350840421466113?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 27, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{38a0e3a6-2b97-4d90-8e7f-8b38303274ba}{130}\" paraid=\"971968875\">Greater Manchester transport commissioner&nbsp;Chris Boardman&nbsp;said: \u201cLondon has benefited from amazing public transport for decades;\u202fnow\u202fit\u2019s Greater Manchester\u2019s time.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{08e7a6bc-392b-4ad7-b35d-24b5ed165e44}{108}\" paraid=\"346528000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/streetsforpeople.co.uk\/\">Streets for People<\/a> congratulated campaigners on the news but highlighted the need to make the streets in&nbsp;Levenshulme&nbsp;safe once people leave the station, highlighting \u2018pavement parking\u2019 as a particular cause for concern.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{08e7a6bc-392b-4ad7-b35d-24b5ed165e44}{118}\" paraid=\"1329540534\">\u201cRegardless of how people get around, they should be able to walk our streets easily and make the journey to and from the station without having to put themselves at risk,\u201d a spokesperson said on Twitter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{08e7a6bc-392b-4ad7-b35d-24b5ed165e44}{124}\" paraid=\"2142874951\">Melissa Parker, a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gmdisabledpeoplespanel.com\/\">Manchester disabled people\u2019s engagement panel<\/a>, told NQ that although she is glad to hear the news, more must be done to improve the everyday lives of disabled people.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{08e7a6bc-392b-4ad7-b35d-24b5ed165e44}{136}\" paraid=\"1816910719\">She said: \u201cI\u2019ve had to plan every single moment of my life from birth.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{08e7a6bc-392b-4ad7-b35d-24b5ed165e44}{142}\" paraid=\"98154134\">Melissa shared an experience that happened to her last month when the lift at Piccadilly Station was broken forcing her to wait an hour for a taxi.<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{08e7a6bc-392b-4ad7-b35d-24b5ed165e44}{142}\" paraid=\"98154134\">She added: \u201cThis is a regular occurrence for disabled people.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{08e7a6bc-392b-4ad7-b35d-24b5ed165e44}{148}\" paraid=\"1816054438\">The lift in Piccadilly Station to platforms 13 and 14 is being replaced next year with work starting in January 2022.
