“Except you can\u2019t really look at masculinity without femininity and obviously from a female point of view it switches the idea of the male gaze to the female gaze as well, and so in a way I\u2019m sort of romanticising my subjects and I\u2019m blurring that line of gender.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ofunne said being in lockdown influenced her art heavily.<\/p>\n
\u201cI carried on making these large-scale works in my tiny university bedroom. The foundation of it was nostalgia, I was missing home, and obviously I was alone as well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Her work paid off now that it has been selected for the summer exhibition, of which this year has been particularly significant for her. <\/p>\n
She said: \u201cWhat this one in particular meant to me was it was hosted by Yinka Shonibare, and Yinka Shonibare\u2019s an artist I\u2019ve studied pretty much my entire life, and this particular exhibition was about reclaiming magic, it was about the joy of practicing and the joy of art.\u201d <\/p>\n
Dr Ian Hartshorne, programme leader for MA Painting at Manchester School of Art, is thrilled at Ofunne’s selected for the exhibition.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m very proud and pleased for Ofunne, who\u2019s one of my current students,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome of the greatest artists who have ever lived and who are still living are included in this exhibition, but the great thing about it is that it also includes lots of anonymous people, so there\u2019s a significant number of contributors to this exhibition.\u201d <\/p>\n
Ofunne said many opportunities have arised since being selected for the exhibition, including being included in a BBC documentary.<\/p>\n
