Transport Select Committee<\/a>, Mr Burnham said: \u201cThese are once-in-200-years decisions for the country and particularly for the north of England.<\/p>\n\u201cIf we get second-best then the orth of England will have second-best for 200 years or more.<\/p>\n

Better<\/h3>\n
Mr Burnham said Greater Manchester does \u201cproportionately better\u201d out of the plan than some areas, as the HS2 extension from Crewe to Manchester is going ahead.<\/p>\n
But the Labour mayor insisted that \u201cbetter is not what we should settle\u201d for.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cWe don\u2019t get the connectivity to Bradford \u2013 that\u2019s a critical neighbour city for us \u2013 nor the full benefits of the capacity and connectivity to Leeds that we\u2019ve been promised.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile there are clearly significant benefits for us, I don\u2019t believe this plan is as good as it can be.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t believe it will unlock the full economic transformation of the North of England.\u201d<\/p>\n
The government insists the new plan will result in similar benefits from previous rail plans and will be delivered quicker and with better value for the taxpayer.<\/p>\n
In total, the plan will spend \u00a354bn on rail and local transport in the Midlands and North, as well as the \u00a342bn already included for HS2 Phases one and two between London, West Midlands and Crewe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
