{"id":6357,"date":"2022-02-02T15:53:55","date_gmt":"2022-02-02T15:53:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2022\/02\/02\/first-bus-manchester-warn-severe-disruption-across-services-throughout-february\/"},"modified":"2022-02-02T15:53:55","modified_gmt":"2022-02-02T15:53:55","slug":"first-bus-manchester-warn-severe-disruption-across-services-throughout-february","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/first-bus-manchester-warn-severe-disruption-across-services-throughout-february\/","title":{"rendered":"First Bus Manchester warn of &#8216;severe&#8217; disruption across services throughout February"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three hundred First Manchester Bus drivers are continuing strike action in Oldham this month demanding a pay increase and better working conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The drivers\u2019 basic wage is \u00a312.40 an hour and are demanding First Bus backdate a 4.8% wage increase they say should have been paid in August 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Oldham depot operates services across the Greater Manchester area and since strike action began, there has been severe disruption to the company\u2019s services including those between Oldham and Manchester city centre.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said:&nbsp;\u201cBus drivers, including those at First Manchester, are no longer prepared to accept low rates of pay&nbsp;for the difficult and stressful work they undertake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One driver talking to World Socialist Web Site described the treatment of First Bus drivers as \u201cmodernised slavery\u201d adding: \u201cWe drive for five hours in the morning, without using the toilet and without a drink.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Dave Roberts said:&nbsp;\u201cFirst Manchester can afford to make our members a fair pay offer but it has chosen not to. Further strikes can be avoided but it requires the company to put forward an improved offer and to return to the negotiating table.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First Bus\u2019 financial report for 2021 reveals the government\u2019s COVID Bus Service Support Grant paid any shortfall between revenues and operation costs.
