Poor-quality rental stock, rogue landlords and discriminatory practices are a big issue for many in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Withington?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Withington<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Ladybarn?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Ladybarn<\/a> and South East <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Fallowfield?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Fallowfield<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PHLsOlmR0S\">https:\/\/t.co\/PHLsOlmR0S<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/txQRj7n1lt\">pic.twitter.com\/txQRj7n1lt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 Withington Ward Lab (@WithWardLab) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WithWardLab\/status\/1488817814995718148?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 2, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Manchester, private rented housing accounts for 38% of households, which equates to around 90,000 homes,\u201d said Councillor Chambers.<\/p>\n<p>In Withington, more than 50% of homes are privately rented.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Local neighbourhoods are blighted by bad landlord practices<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cEveryone has the right to a safe and secure home,\u201d she added, blaming the Conservative government and subsequent underfunding for the council\u2019s struggle in meeting housing requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, thousands of tenants across the city continue to live in poor conditions and are paying extortionate rent to do so. On top of this, local neighbourhoods are blighted by bad landlord practices,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The motion will give the council increased power against landlord discrimination and malpractice, as well as offering a simplified process of action for residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be offering a route for residents to challenge bad landlord practice that doesn\u2019t involve costly solicitors or intimidating legal processes,\u201d Councillor Chambers said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Councillor Becky Chambers, Labour, Withington, Manchester, council meeting\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"8068\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/02\/273166803_2438437342953274_609655191511634953_n.jpg\" title=\"Photo: Withington Labour\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Councillor Chambers and councillor White, who both supported the motion, were in attendance at the council meeting last week<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Withington Lib&nbsp;Dem councillor, John Leech, raised questions about the motion to ensure tenants have a \u201csafe, secure, warm and insulated home\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you trying to kid that the current housing crisis only started in 2010? The housing crisis has been going on far longer than the conveniently chosen date,\u201d he said, describing the motion as Labour\u2019s \u201cparty political nonsense\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Your affordable housing policy is a big con, and far more needs to be done<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cNothing is more inaccurate and typical of the level of complacency of Labour councillors than paragraph five, which falsely claims that under Labour leadership the council made great efforts to ensure that Mancunians have access to good quality, affordable housing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He claimed the number of affordable rented homes in Manchester had&nbsp;only increased by 257 since 2015 under the Labour council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour affordable housing policy is a big con, and far more needs to be done to provide the quality and number of affordable homes that Manchester residents need and deserve,\u201d he said, despite ultimately supporting the motion.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Chambers responded: \u201cI was disappointed though not surprised to hear councillor Leech deliberately misinterpret the spirit of my motion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s interesting to hear him speak about this issue today because a quick Hansard search will tell you that in his ten years as a member of Parliament for Manchester Withington, he didn\u2019t mention landlord licensing once.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other councillors supported&nbsp;the motion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis motion levels a historically uneven playing field that has become even worse throughout the pandemic whilst incomes have fallen and welfare dependency has increased,\u201d said&nbsp;Councillor Gregg Stanton.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Gavin White added: \u201cI welcome this motion, and I agree that we need to see everybody in the city have a decent, safe, secure and affordable home to live in, and this motion gives us the power to do this in the private rented sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">These selective licensing schemes introduced this week will start to act on motion passed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ManCityCouncil?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ManCityCouncil<\/a> today to improve standards of housing in private rented sector.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tThere is no place for rogue landlords in our city.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tWe will use these powers to crackdown on unfit housing. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LHet57fH3F\">https:\/\/t.co\/LHet57fH3F<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 Gavin White (@gavinwhite76) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gavinwhite76\/status\/1488861692545183750?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 2, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The motion was unanimously passed by council.<\/p>\n<p>After the meeting, Councillor Chambers said: \u201cI\u2019m really pleased that my motion to council this morning on standards in private rented housing passed unanimously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver 50% of residents in Withington ward rent privately and taking action against rogue landlords is a priority for the Withington Labour team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new rules will prevent discriminatory practices from licensed landlords, work to stop properties from being empty for extended periods, and allow the council to lobby the government to introduce greater regulation over private rented landlords.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plans will tackle poor-quality rental practices and rogue landlords within Withington and surrounding areas<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1408,"featured_media":6403,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_uf_show_specific_survey":0,"_uf_disable_surveys":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4972,1],"tags":[4415,441,132,4672,2754,916],"class_list":["post-6405","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-uncategorised","tag-council-meeting","tag-labour","tag-manchester-city-council","tag-private-rent","tag-renting","tag-withington"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.1 -
