{"id":6474,"date":"2022-02-16T13:01:57","date_gmt":"2022-02-16T13:01:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2022\/02\/16\/yousef-makkis-family-await-court-ruling-judicial-review-following-devastating-inquest\/"},"modified":"2022-02-16T13:01:57","modified_gmt":"2022-02-16T13:01:57","slug":"yousef-makkis-family-await-court-ruling-judicial-review-following-devastating-inquest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/yousef-makkis-family-await-court-ruling-judicial-review-following-devastating-inquest\/","title":{"rendered":"Yousef Makki\u2019s family await court ruling on judicial review following &#8216;devastating&#8217; inquest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The family of Yousef Makki are awaiting a court ruling for a judicial review into the verdict of Yousef\u2019s killing.<\/p>\n<p>During a seven-day inquest last year, senior south Manchester coroner Alison Mutch said that she could not conclude that the death of Yousef was unlawful.<\/p>\n<p>The family&nbsp;have applied to the High Court for a judicial review to repeal the coroner&#8217;s ruling and seek a new inquest in front of a different coroner.<\/p>\n<p>Yousef, a Burnage scholarship student at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mgs.org\/\">Manchester Grammar School<\/a>, was only 17 when he was fatally stabbed through the heart in 2019 by his friend Joshua Molnar.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Memory from 2yrs ago.. getting close to the anniversary now &amp; every year my only wish is that i could bring you back Yousef <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Yousefmakki?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Yousefmakki<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4wMkxE9oKF\">pic.twitter.com\/4wMkxE9oKF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 JUSTICE FOR YOUSEF MAKKI (@justice4Yousef) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/justice4Yousef\/status\/1493867982296133636?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 16, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>At the time, Molnar was acquitted of murder and manslaughter for the stabbing.<\/p>\n<p>Molnar was sentenced to a 16-month detention and training order for possession of the knife used in the incident and lying to police at the scene of the crime.<\/p>\n<p>His co-defendant at the 2019 trial Adam Chowdhary, also 17 at the time, who described Yousef as his &#8216;best friend&#8217; was acquitted of perverting the course of justice.<\/p>\n<p>Molnar said he acted in self defence during the incident after Yousef allegedly pushed and punched him during a row between the two Manchester Grammar School pupils.<\/p>\n<p>Giving evidence at the inquest, Molnar insisted he could not remember whether himself or Yousef pulled the knife out first, describing the fatal incident as a \u2018small clash\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Following November&#8217;s inquest, Coroner Ms Mutch recorded a conclusion, saying: &#8220;Yousef died from complications of a stab wound to chest. The precise circumstances in which he was wounded cannot, on balance of probabilities, be ascertained.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She dismissed possible verdicts of accidental death, misadventure&nbsp;and an open verdict.<\/p>\n<p>Yousef\u2019s sister, Jade Akoum, told NQ: \u201cWe were devastated at the \u2018narrative\u2019 verdict from the inquest in November 2021 and believe we have the grounds to ask for the ruling to be quashed.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We hope to have a new inquest&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The family&#8217;s formal application for a judicial review argues that the court ruling was \u2018unreasonable\u2019 as it &#8220;failed to address or make findings on central matters in the case such as to enable her to reach a conclusion &#8211; on the balance of probabilities &#8211; as to the lawfulness of the killing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Jade said: \u201cWe hope for an unlawful killing. We think all of the evidence provided to the inquest proved that to be the conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery person who followed was shocked at the outcome given.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The application has now been formally lodged at the High Court and currently awaits a decision.<\/p>\n<p>Yousef\u2019s sister Jade has also produced a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Boy-Pound-His-Pocket-ebook\/dp\/B09NCHVYCS\/ref=sr_1_1?qid=1639157833&amp;refinements=p_27%3AJade++Akoum&amp;s=digital-text&amp;sr=1-1&amp;text=Jade++Akoum\">book <\/a>on her fight for justice for Yousef.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The family of Yousef Makki are awaiting a court ruling for a judicial review into the verdict of Yousef\u2019s killing.
