{"id":6477,"date":"2022-02-16T13:03:37","date_gmt":"2022-02-16T13:03:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2022\/02\/16\/i-didnt-know-it-was-illegal-salford-man-ordered-pay-damages-after-illegally-dumping-fridge\/"},"modified":"2022-02-16T13:03:37","modified_gmt":"2022-02-16T13:03:37","slug":"i-didnt-know-it-was-illegal-salford-man-ordered-pay-damages-after-illegally-dumping-fridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/i-didnt-know-it-was-illegal-salford-man-ordered-pay-damages-after-illegally-dumping-fridge\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;I didn&#8217;t know it was illegal&#8217;: Salford man ordered to pay damages after illegally dumping fridge freezer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Salford man has been found guilty of illegally dumping&nbsp;a fridge freezer and bags of rubbish.<br \/>\n\tBenjamin Obejo, of Silsden Walk, Salford&nbsp;hired a van to dump a fridge freezer, black bin bags and other items of rubbish on land at Harding Street.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"8131\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"387\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/02\/mr_obejo.jpg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>CCTV footage from Salford Council showing Mr Obejo disposing of the items<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Salford Magistrates&#8217; Court&nbsp;heard that officers from the council&#8217;s CCTV team saw a rented van dumping waste just after 11pm in September 2020.<\/p>\n<p>They were able to trace Obejo as the driver of the van and when&nbsp;interviewed he admitted hiring the van to dump the items.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When asked why he had not disposed of the waste at a recycling centre, he claimed: &#8220;It was late and nowhere was open, sorry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Obejo admitted he would be angry if someone dumped waste on land where he lived, but claimed he was unaware it was illegal to do so.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The court fined him \u00a3200, along with&nbsp; \u00a31,000 costs and&nbsp;\u00a334 victim surcharge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking&nbsp;after the case, Councillor David Lancaster, lead member for environment, neighbourhoods and community safety, said: &#8220;How can anyone think it&#8217;s right to dump waste in the middle of a street when it could and should have been taken to a waste recycling centre baffles me.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hope this case sends out a strong message that fly tipping is not acceptable in Salford and we will not hesitate to prosecute offenders using CCTV evidence or information from the public.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Salford man has been found guilty of illegally dumping&nbsp;a fridge freezer and bags of rubbish.
