Please get the pavements and bike lanes cleared to allow active travel to and from the hospital via Plymouth Grove. Disabled person here who needs to be able to walk and cross roads safely. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5y59YdteW8\">pic.twitter.com\/5y59YdteW8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 Dr. J. Kasmire (@JKasmireComplex) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JKasmireComplex\/status\/1481911430240743429?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 14, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>House manager of Elizabeth Gaskell&nbsp;House, Sally Jastrzebski-Lloyd, said: \u201cNormally they are all on the pavement. It\u2019s half-term, though, so there\u2019ll be lots of people off from Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that\u2019s still a pain if you\u2019re pulling out of our accessible parking in the courtyard and you\u2019ve got two cars there that you can\u2019t see.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You\u2019ve got to get out in the middle of the road before you can actually see.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have coach groups, and normally if all the cars are parked there, they can\u2019t stop on the front for people to get out, so they have to go round the corner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just doesn\u2019t look great as well. It\u2019s just not very nice for the community, to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Referencing high parking ticket costs, Jastrzebski-Lloyd said: \u201cI don\u2019t know what the solution is, really, but it\u2019s because people don\u2019t want to pay to park, isn\u2019t it? I appreciate that it is expensive, so there is a degree of sympathy.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ardwick manchester plymouth grove car parking school sign \" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"8226\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"338\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/02\/ardwick-scaled.jpg\" title=\"Plymouth Grove, Ardwick\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>A car parked on the pavement along Plymouth Grove<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A spokesperson for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rac.co.uk\/\">RAC<\/a> said: \u201cPavement parking is illegal in London and Scotland is also planning to outlaw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department for Transport conducted a consultation in 2020 which sought views on whether a ban should be extended to the whole of England.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Presently, Highway Code rule 244 has stated that drivers \u2018must not&nbsp;park partially or wholly on the pavement in London and should not do so elsewhere unless signs permit it\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRule 242 states: \u2018You must not leave your vehicle or trailer in a dangerous position or where it causes any unnecessary obstruction of the road\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe RAC believes there is a difference between blocking a pavement which is completely unacceptable and a driver that might put a wheel or two up the kerb, but leaves sufficient space for wheelchair users or people pushing prams.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Where a gap of at least 1.5m cannot be left on the pavement, the driver should not park in that location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One reason why drivers may not be considerate when parking on pavements is unclear signs. Plymouth Grove has a school sign that is very worn down and barely legible.<\/p>\n<p>The RAC added: \u201cWe urge councils to ensure signage is clear and visible to drivers. Where signage has been damaged or is generally worn down, councils should quickly replace them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Northern Quota has asked the city council for response. Ardwick Councillor Amna Abdullatif had this to say: &#8220;One of our biggest issues in Ardwick often relates to parking, much of it incredibly inconsiderate and dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are holding two days of action this week between 7:30am-9am, with our neighbourhood officers, GMP and parking enforcement officers along Plymouth Grove and around the school to inform people of the restrictions that will be reinstated by the traffic regulation orders on 18th March.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve raised the issue regarding the faded school sign, also.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Motorists who park&nbsp;on the pavement of Ardwick\u2019s Plymouth Grove are blocking the path for patients trying to get to Manchester Royal Infirmary.
